Hatley Park

Oceanfront Estate and National Historic Status

Hatley Park is in Colwood in Greater Victoria, British Columbia, and forms part of the Royal Roads University campus. The 565-acre Edwardian estate combines Hatley Castle, formal gardens, mature woodland, a waterfront landscape and views toward the Olympic Mountains. Its evolution from a private estate to a military college and then a public university has preserved an unusually complete cultural landscape with architectural, horticultural and educational significance.

Estate Development and Changing Uses

James and Laura Dunsmuir purchased the estate in 1907 and commissioned British Columbia architect Samuel Maclure in 1908 to design a Tudor Revival residence with a baronial character. Built by a large workforce in about eighteen months, the castle became the family home in 1910. Canada’s Department of National Defence acquired the property in 1940 for naval officer training; it later became Royal Roads Military College. When the college closed in 1995, Royal Roads University opened on the site and continued its educational use.

The Italian Garden

Completed in 1914 beside the castle and croquet green, the Italian Garden is the estate’s most formal landscape. Boxwood hedges and century-old yuccas define a rectangular plan, while statues representing the four seasons, stone balustrades, marble urns and original brick paths reinforce its symmetry. A shaded loggia and pergola at the western end carry fragrant purple wisteria. The design also recalls the medicinal gardens fashionable in the Edwardian period.

The Japanese Garden

The Japanese Garden dates from the 1910s. Isaburo Kishida designed the upper garden with streams, Japanese maples and flowering cherries imported from Yokohama. Around the teahouse, azaleas, primroses, stone lanterns and a water wheel shape a quiet sequence of views. Tadashi Noda designed the lower garden, built between 1916 and 1919 around a small lake with Shirotae cherries, Pink Pearl rhododendrons, a curved wooden bridge, an island and a waterside pavilion.

The Rose Garden and Woodland Landscape

Based on a plan by Brett and Hall Landscape Architects, the Rose Garden uses concentric paths around a sundial and a perimeter pergola for climbing and rambling roses. Its collection includes American Pillar from the original planting, David Austin roses, old roses and musk roses selected for colour, form and fragrance. Beyond the formal gardens, mature Douglas fir and western red cedar woodland, the lagoon, waterfront trails and native and exotic plant communities connect Hatley Park’s garden history with its wider ecological setting.
