The Butchart Gardens

From Abandoned Quarry to World-Famous Garden

Established in 1904 by Jennie Butchart, The Butchart Gardens began as a creative vision to transform an exhausted limestone quarry—once the raw material source for her husband’s cement plant—into a beautiful garden paradise. What started with a few sweet peas and rose bushes has blossomed into a globally renowned 55-acre display garden, still privately owned and operated by the family to this day.

A Century of Legacy: National Historic Site of Canada

Over more than a century and four generations, The Butchart Gardens have grown into one of the world’s most celebrated gardens. In 2004, on its hundredth birthday, the Canadian government designated The Gardens a National Historic Site of Canada. Remnants of the original cement plant still stand today, alongside millions of bedding plants in over 900 varieties. More than fifty dedicated gardeners work year-round to maintain this legendary landscape.

Five Distinct Gardens

The Sunken Garden, once an abandoned quarry, now flourishes with lush greenery and vibrant blooms, surrounded by towering evergreen walls. The Ross Fountain adds a touch of tranquility. The Rose Garden overflows with fragrant roses in a riot of colors, while the Japanese Garden, situated by the seaside, offers a serene Eastern aesthetic. The Italian Garden, occupying the former tennis court, brings classical elegance, and the Mediterranean Garden evokes the warm charm of Southern Europe. From March through October, nearly one million flowers bloom in continuous succession; during the remaining months, visitors can enjoy colorful berries, sculpted shrubs, and evergreen trees.

Visitor Information

The Gardens are open year-round, with seasonal hours. On-site amenities include dining options, a coffee shop, and the Seed & Gift Store. Wheelchair and stroller rentals are available. Night Illuminations run from late May through September, Wednesday through Sunday evenings, transforming the gardens into a magical illuminated wonderland.
