历史沿革与创会宗旨
国际植物繁育者协会（International Plant Propagators Society, IPPS）是一家以”寻求与共享”（To Seek and To Share）为座右铭的国际性行业学术团体，于 1951 年在美国俄亥俄州克利夫兰由约 70 位植物繁育者发起成立，最初以交换植物繁育专业经验为宗旨。经过近四分之三世纪的发展，IPPS 始终以”在全球范围内寻求并共享植物繁育知识”为愿景，已成为覆盖全球多个区域的国际同行网络，其自身定位也从协会（Society）逐步演进为学会（Production Society），反映出成员从繁育者扩展到园艺研究、教育与产业全链条的开放格局。

Founding History and Mission
The International Plant Propagators Society (IPPS) is an international association of plant production professionals founded in 1951 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, when approximately 70 plant propagators gathered with the goal of sharing knowledge. Guided by the motto “To Seek and To Share,” the organization has continued for more than seven decades to expand into a global forum for plant production expertise, evolving in identity from Society to Production Society to reflect the broader inclusion of horticultural research and education.
Organization and Seven Regional Structure
IPPS is organized and administered on a regional level, with seven geographically defined regions currently operating: Australia, Europe, Eastern Region of North America, New Zealand, Southern Africa, Southern Region of North America, and Western Region of North America. The International Board is chaired by Tom Saunders of Saunders Brothers Farm Market (Piney River, Virginia) with President Elizabeth (Dunham) Erickson of Knight Hollow Nursery (Middleton, Wisconsin), and Executive Director Dr. Katie McDavid. The international office is located in Monroe, Connecticut, USA (PO Box 742, Monroe, CT 06468), with international editor Dr. Robert Geneve of the University of Kentucky overseeing publications.
Member Benefits and Scholarly Activities
IPPS membership provides access to a global network of plant production professionals and significant educational resources. Members enjoy access to annual conferences, field days, hands-on workshops, and short-term study tours across all seven regions, discounted registration for international events, and the right to read all Combined Proceedings accumulated since 1951. The library of more than seventy volumes of Combined Proceedings from past conferences represents one of the field’s longest continuously published technical records. The Society also coordinates scholarships for young horticulturists, research grants, and structured international exchange programs that pair regions for staff exchanges such as Australia-Southern Africa and Europe-Eastern North America.
International Cooperation and Talent Development
IPPS advances global plant production knowledge through a layered international cooperation framework. The Long-Range Planning Committee, chaired by Brie Arthur, and the Strategic Planning Committee, chaired by Tim Lawrance-Owen, coordinate research funding, youth scholarships, and cross-regional exchanges that connect researchers in the United States, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Southern Africa. Youth programs supported by IPPS enable emerging horticulturists to participate in regional study tours, visit commercial nurseries, and present research results at the annual Combined Proceedings. The combined editorial team representing each region ensures that published proceedings balance contributions from universities, public gardens, and commercial nurseries.
Industry Position and Historical Contribution
Over its seventy-five-year history, IPPS has become one of the most respected international scholarly societies in plant production and continues to honor regional contributors through the Award of Honor program and the Past Presidents roster, which lists recipients from Henry J. Ishida in 1961 through Grant Hayman in 2025. The combination of seven regional networks, seventy plus volumes of Combined Proceedings, and an annual international tour of more than a thousand participants has positioned IPPS as a de facto standard platform for plant propagation practice worldwide, connecting commercial nurseries and horticultural research institutions across North America, Europe, Australasia, and Southern Africa.
