History and Organizational Role
The American Public Gardens Association, or APGA, is a professional organization for the public horticulture field. Its official history traces the organization back to cooperation around botanical gardens and arboreta in the 1920s. The predecessor organization completed its first year in 1940 with about 50 members, compiled a North American garden directory in 1946, and began publishing a quarterly newsletter in 1950. It incorporated in Washington, D.C. in 1971 and qualified as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Today, APGA connects nearly 600 public garden institutions and more than 11,000 garden professionals while advancing collaboration, conservation, education, and public service.
Membership and Professional Exchange
APGA members include botanic gardens, arboreta, zoos, cemeteries, museums, colleges and universities, display gardens, and research facilities.
