Water Garden Tour
Background and identity of KPS
The Kansas Pond Society (KPS) is a Wichita, Kansas based non profit water garden club serving members across the Wichita metropolitan area and the wider state of Kansas. From the start the goal has been simple: bring local water garden enthusiasts together so they can learn from each other, share suppliers, and avoid the expensive mistakes that come with building a backyard pond on your own. KPS remains the only dedicated water garden club in the Wichita area and, by membership count, the largest gardening club locally.
Education and member services
KPS focuses on three ongoing activities. First, hands on education for members through monthly meetings, a printed newsletter, and on site demonstrations, covering topics such as pond siting, filtration and circulation, koi and aquatic plant selection, liner and electrical safety, and seasonal care. Second, the club acts as a bridge to local water garden suppliers, negotiating discounts on equipment and consumables for members and publishing those terms in the monthly newsletter. Third, KPS maintains a long running local community where many members stay involved for over a decade, starting from their first backyard pond build.
Member governance
The club is run by an elected board with two year terms. The board consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer, plus two at large members who take on rotating responsibilities such as programs, events, the membership directory, and the website. Annual dues are USD 20 per household, with a USD 5 surcharge for members who prefer a printed copy of the monthly newsletter mailed to them. These fees have stayed essentially unchanged for many years.
Connections with the wider gardening community
KPS is an active member of the Wichita Area Garden Council, which brings together the various local garden clubs and co organizes plant sales, tours, and joint open days. The club also maintains informal contact with other water garden societies across the central United States, sharing notes on overwintering species, fish health issues, and emergency response to severe spring and summer weather. These horizontal links keep KPS anchored in a wider water gardener network rather than working in isolation.
Annual flagship event: the Water Garden Tour
Each year at the end of June, KPS organizes the Water Garden Tour, opening member built backyard water gardens to the Wichita public and showing the range of sizes, themes, and landscape integrations that home water features can take. The Tour is the club’s main outreach event and the way most new members first encounter KPS. The same season also includes the spring Plant Swap and two combined Plant Sales staged with partner organizations such as Botanica and the Wichita Gardens.
