Iris City Gardens

Iris City Gardens is a family-owned iris nursery located in Primm Springs, Tennessee, USA, run by Macey and Greg McCullough. Founded in 1994, the garden is now in its 32nd growing year as of 2026. Set about 40 miles southwest of Nashville just off Interstate 840 Exit 7, the property combines a working iris nursery, display beds, and a visitor-friendly country garden where guests are invited to bring a picnic and stay for the day.

Nursery History and Location

Founded in 1994 on what began as a family garden, Iris City Gardens has grown over three decades into a small specialty nursery open to the public during bloom season. Macey McCullough oversees the iris beds and hybridizing work, while Greg McCullough manages grounds and visitor hospitality, and together they have turned a stretch of rural Tennessee farmland into a combined nursery, display garden, and family studio. Primm Springs sits at the border of Hickman and Williamson counties at roughly 200 m elevation, within USDA hardiness zones 6b to 7a, where hot humid summers and mild winters suit Louisiana iris perfectly while still supporting bearded iris, peonies, and daylilies. Thirty-two continuous years of operation have given the McCulloughs a stable breeding pool across bearded iris, Louisiana iris, peonies, and daylilies, and the garden has been listed in American Iris Society regional display schedules for many seasons.

Plant Collection and Bloom Calendar

The nursery carries four main perennial groups: Louisiana iris, bearded iris, peonies, and daylilies, plus a rotating selection of other potted perennials. Louisiana iris is the second pillar of the catalog alongside bearded iris and includes named cultivars such as ‘Rings of Romeo’, ‘Reverchon Snowfall’, ‘Eyes Wide Open’, and ‘Oriental Parasol’, all bred for wetland tolerance and early-June bloom. Bearded iris is divided into tall bearded (TB) and reblooming types; the rebloomers flower in spring and then again from June through November, producing two to three cycles depending on weather. The annual bloom sequence runs tall bearded from late April to mid-May, Louisiana iris from mid-May to early June, peonies peaking around mid-May, and daylilies in mid-June, making Iris City Gardens one of the few small private nurseries in the mid-South that strings these four perennial groups into a single continuous bloom season.

Visiting Hours and Pot-Only Sales

The nursery opens to the public from April 15 through June 28 each year, Wednesday through Sunday from 9 am to 4 pm Central time, and is closed Monday and Tuesday for grounds work; visits outside that window are by appointment. Picnic tables are provided on site, and visitors are encouraged to bring a lunch, family, and pets and spend the day, with the McCulloughs typically checking in to update guests on current bloom progress and recommending a phone call close to the planned visit date to confirm weather-driven schedule changes. Sales are strictly potted, on-site only: the nursery no longer takes mail orders, does not ship in spring, and does not export internationally. Louisiana iris orders are accepted only through September 1 and ship in September; there is no online ordering system, and customers place orders by downloading and printing the order form, then mailing, faxing, emailing, or phoning it in.

Website and Ordering

The official Iris City Gardens website hosts the current catalog in PDF form, printable order form, general cultural and shipping notes, and a visitor preview gallery titled At The Farm, plus driving directions from I-40/West Nashville, I-65/South Nashville/Franklin, Columbia, and Dickson. Customers who cannot visit during bloom season are advised to download the PDF catalog, print the order form, complete it at home, and mail or fax it back; credit card and check payments are both accepted. The McCulloughs encourage visitors to flag any broken links, misspelled words, or misidentified plants they encounter on the site.
