Founding and University Role

Established in 1959, the University of Alberta Botanic Garden is located in Parkland County southwest of Edmonton. As part of the University of Alberta, it combines public engagement with education, research, northern-climate horticulture and cultural landscapes under a mission of connecting people with the earth through plants.

Scale and Living Collections

The Garden covers about 97 hectares, or 240 acres, including roughly 80 acres of cultivated visitor areas as well as woods, wetlands and meadows. Official figures identify about 4,000 plant species, more than 3,000 flowering annuals and three indoor showhouses, with an emphasis on plants capable of thriving in a demanding northern climate.

Cultural Gardens and Major Landscapes

Major attractions include the 4.8-hectare Aga Khan Garden, the five-acre Kurimoto Japanese Garden, the Indigenous Peoples Garden and the Patrick Seymour Alpine Garden. The Aga Khan Garden contains more than 25,000 trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and wetland plants, while the tropical, temperate and arid showhouses broaden the climatic range on display.

Learning and Cultural Programs

Programs serve both children and adults. Curriculum-linked Kids in the Garden experiences support groups from kindergarten through Grade 12, while adult offerings include guided walks, nature observation, arts and wellness activities. The Pathways series uses performance, food, workshops and conversation to build understanding across cultures in a garden setting.

Public Access and Community Support

The Garden operates in every season, with reduced hours or closures possible during winter and early spring. Admission, memberships, events and volunteer opportunities provide several routes for public participation. The Friends organization, founded in 1971, supports collections, facilities and educational programs through fundraising and community engagement.
