Prevost Ranch and Gardens

Overview

Prevost Ranch and Gardens is a San Jose, California family-run operation centered on a commercial bearded iris (Iris germanica) nursery (Nola’s Iris Garden) and a seasonal display garden, located in the east foothills above Silicon Valley.

Nursery and Sales Platform

The commercial arm at /shopsite/ sells thousands of bearded iris plants hand-dug and shipped direct from the ranch. Available classes cover Border, Dwarf, Intermediate, Tall Bearded, Rebloomers, Space Age, and Fragrant. The flagship Annand Introductions line carries on the legacy of hybridizer Robert Annand, winner of the 2001 Wm Mohr Medal, who passed away in December 2013 with a large collection of unreleased seedlings.

Display Garden and Bloom Season

The display garden was designed and planted starting in 2003 and first opened in spring 2004. Free virtual and in-person tours were organized by month and by year, with documented walks in March 2005, April 2005, May 2006, and May 2008, all of which remain online for retrospective viewing. From its hilltop position, the garden overlooks the San Francisco Bay and the South Bay cities including San Jose, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Palo Alto, and Redwood City.

Operating Status and History

Both the nursery and the display garden have retired: the website states the iris farm is now closed after 22 years of supply, and the 2025 visiting season was the last year the garden opened to the public. Throughout its run the operation hand-dug rhizomes direct from the bay-area farm, guaranteeing true-to-name, pest-free, blooming-size plants shipped at the right transplant time for the buyer zone.

Visits and Related Operations

Historically, garden visits were free in April and May with a suggested $5 donation per person; the same ranch also runs a horse-boarding stable and distributes Elk Grove Milling horse feed and bedding. With both the nursery and the garden now closed, the site remains online as a historical archive of bearded iris varieties and garden imagery.
