FoBBS Roll of Honour 近年离世的业界前辈 Kath Hughes(2026 年 7 月)与 Paul Lesniewicz(2023 年 6 月)、George Cox(2022 年 7 月)、Mike Konig(2020 年 1 月)等人的追思页面也长期保留在联邦网站上,以纪念他们在国家盆景收藏建设、欧洲盆景大会组织以及新苗培训方面的长期贡献。

Founding and Federation origins

The Federation of British Bonsai Societies was formally constituted on 31 October 1982 at a meeting held at the Phoenix, Palace Street, London, by twelve founder societies including Bedford Bonsai Society, Bristol Bonsai Society, Kew Kai Bonsai Society, Manchester Bonsai Society, National Bonsai Society, Scottish Bonsai Society and the Yorkshire Bonsai Association. The initiative had grown out of the first UK Bonsai Convention at the University of Keele in September 1981, where enthusiasts led by Harry Tomlinson discussed the possibility of a national umbrella body. At the 1983 Keele convention the Federation selected a Scots pine design by Dan Barton as its emblem, a mark that has since appeared on letterheads, publications, silver brooches and association merchandise.

National Bonsai Collection and Birmingham Botanical Gardens

From its earliest years the Federation pursued the idea of a permanent national bonsai display, modelled on the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens collection in the United States. After protracted negotiations with the Royal Horticultural Society and an unsuccessful exploration of Hever Castle, the project found its home at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Edgbaston. Together with the Gardens’ trustees the Federation raised roughly £60,000 to build a Japanese-style bonsai garden, which opened to the public in late August 1992. The National Bonsai Collection is composed of trees donated or bequeathed by leading British collectors and remains maintained by FoBBS.

Conventions, exhibitions and RHS Chelsea Gold medals

FoBBS has organised national conventions at venues including Keele, Nottingham, Sussex, Stratford-on-Avon, Bournemouth and Hull, complemented by a rolling programme of regional exhibitions staged by member societies. Its 1991 hosting of the Bonsai Clubs International Annual Congress at Birmingham’s International Convention Centre was the first time BCI had convened outside the United States, drawing 700 delegates from 23 countries and an audience of more than 5,000 visitors. The Federation’s stand has returned to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show almost every year since 2003, collecting Gold medals in all but a handful of seasons, alongside regular displays at Gardeners’ World Live and other horticultural events.

Member society services, training and new talent

FoBBS today brings together around sixty member clubs across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Through its services the Federation maintains an information database and Speaker’s Diary, runs the New Talent Competition on a regional basis to encourage emerging demonstrators, underwrites comprehensive third-party insurance for member societies at competitive rates, and provides financial or material support for national and regional bonsai events. Its Bonsai Show Judges training programme aims to bring a common standard to local and national exhibitions, and a developing package of educational presentations is being made available on loan to clubs. Public enquiries are directed via the channels listed on the official website.

Roll of Honour and In Memoriam

The Federation’s Roll of Honour, first awarded in 1998, recognises individuals who have made a sustained contribution to British bonsai, with the earliest list including Bill Horan, who is credited with establishing FoBBS, together with Malcolm Hughes, Kath Hughes and Dan Barton. The website also carries extended In Memoriam pages for Kath Hughes, who died on 13 July 2026 and was instrumental in creating the National Bonsai Collection, for Paul Lesniewicz (1945-2023), founder of the European Bonsai Association and the Bonsai Centrum Heidelberg, for George Cox (1936-2022), long-serving President of Ambion Bonsai Club, and for Mike Konig (1960-2020), whose Miko Bonsai became a familiar name in the Midlands.
