EBA European Bonsai Association

Origins and the Heidelberg Beginnings (1980-1984)

The European Bonsai Association traces its roots to informal contacts between enthusiasts in Heidelberg in 1980. Letter exchanges and small gatherings led to the idea of a pan-European body. Two years later, German writer Paul Lesniewicz invited representatives from clubs in Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Spain, Italy and Belgium to the first European Bonsai Convention, again held in Heidelberg, to discuss whether such a body could be founded. A second round of talks took place at the inaugural Spanish Bonsai Congress in Valencia, where a draft constitution was circulated and met with an enthusiastic response.

Formal Foundation and Early Activity Framework

At the second British Bonsai Convention held at Keele University in 1983, the general concept of the association was accepted and Marc De Beule was asked to finalise the bye-laws. The first Annual General Meeting took place in Mannheim in 1984, with Peter Brown elected as President, Marc De Beule as Secretary and Cees Doppenberg as Treasurer. On 24 September 1984 the bye-laws were officially laid down by notarial deed, with publication in the Dutch official gazette on 9 December of the same year. The 1985 convention in Apeldoorn saw the association join the Nippon Bonsai Association and start discussions on the World Bonsai Convention and the founding of a World Bonsai Friendship Federation (WBFF).

International Expansion and the New Talents Contest

The 1995 convention in Monaco saw the launch of the New Talents Contest (NTC), a competition in which each member country first selects its national candidate before sending them to the European heat. The contest immediately caught the attention of convention attendees and the bonsai press, and the EBA Board later formalised its rules, embedding it as a permanent feature of every subsequent convention. In 2001, EBA helped host the 4th World Bonsai Convention in München. Annual conventions have since rotated between member countries almost every year.

Membership Growth and Recent Milestones

Membership grew steadily after the turn of the century. Austria and Poland joined after the 2003 convention in Czechia, Slovenia followed in 2006, Portugal in 2007, Lithuania in 2010 and Hungary in 2011. In 2009 the Lorca convention adopted new bye-laws and the association completed formal registration in Austria, giving it a stable legal footing. According to the official website, the most recent listed convention took place in Albi, France, in 2019.

Governance and Reach

The association now has 19 member countries — Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Hungary, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Monaco, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom — and serves more than 25,000 individual enthusiasts. Its Board consists of President Marc Noelanders (Belgium), Vice-President 1 Pierre Bedes (France), Vice-President 2 Václav Novák (Czech Republic), Treasurer Jürgen Carocci (Germany), Secretary Detlef Mostler and Webmaster Nigel Wright. EBA maintains close links with the WBFF, Bonsai Clubs International, the North American Bonsai Association and other international bodies, with its core activities being the annual convention, the New Talents Contest and the wider amateur-to-amateur exchange between national clubs.
