NPC Association Background and Founding Body
Nederlandse Planten Collecties (NPC) is a coordinated network of plant collections launched under De Koninklijke Vereniging voor Boskoopse Culturen (KVBC), the Dutch royal association for nursery stock and cultivar assessment based in Gouda (Wilde Wingerdlaan 16, 2803 WC Gouda). The programme currently lists 103 officially registered NPC collections that are maintained by private nurseries, public arboreta, botanical gardens, university-affiliated gardens and family-run plantings across the Netherlands. The association publishes the Reglement, the full collection index, the application procedure and the contact details of every collection holder on its official site.
Reglement, Plant Categories and Site Requirements
The NPC Reglement covers 11 sections, including objectives, definitions, plant assortment rules, location requirements, plant spacing and labelling, visiting arrangements, application and evaluation, admission and resignation, publication, award judging and provisions for unlisted cases. Only collections of woody plants, hardy perennials and bulbous plants qualify for NPC registration; annuals, biennials, vegetables, house plants and tropical greenhouse species are explicitly out of scope. Collections must be planted in the open ground in a single contiguous plot, with permanent securely attached labels on every plant and a visible name board for the collection as a whole.
Collection Distribution and Notable Examples
The 103 NPC collections are distributed across the Netherlands and the Reglement encourages multiple collections of the same genus on different soils and in different regions for parallel comparison. The Magnolia collection is maintained by Piet Vergeldt boomkwekerij in Lottum and currently lists several hundred taxa including Magnolia hybrids, species and selected cultivars. The Quercus collection is held by Trompenburg Tuinen & Arboretum in Rotterdam and brings together about 500 oak species together with multiple wild-origin acorn progenies and several Trompenburg-raised selections. The Camellia collection at the Peace Palace in The Hague is run by the Carnegie Stichting and lists over 100 commonly cultivated Camellia cultivars.
Visiting and Publication Channels
Each NPC collection follows the same visiting rule: the collection is open either during the holder’s regular open days or by appointment booked with the holder. The official site lists every collection with the holder’s name, town, province, genus, a representative plant list and the holder’s contact details. KVBC, as the founding body, undertakes to publish the NPC collections in its annual Dendroflora yearbook under the chapter “Nederlandse Planten Collecties”, so a properly maintained collection remains on the public record for as long as it meets the Reglement.
Updating Procedure and External Cooperation
Chapters 8 and 9 of the Reglement cover the procedure by which a holder can update or withdraw an NPC collection. Any change request can be sent to the NPC secretary, after which the association updates the public list on its Wijziging doorgeven page. The NPC itself is run as a non-profit cooperation project under the KVBC umbrella, and KVBC supplies the trademark, the Reglement and the publication channels. The committee is drawn from KVBC nominees, holder representatives and independent dendrologists.
