Family Origins and the Farm

Willow Bend Iris Farm sits on a four-acre plot along J Road in Grand Junction, Colorado, with an adjoining acre of daylilies. It is run by Darrell and Victoria Rule, who previously ranched near Steamboat Springs. In retirement they visited an iris farm in Eckert, decided to take it over, and spent nearly three months hand-digging twenty-five thousand plants to relocate them to their present site. The farm’s About page notes that they have now owned Willow Bend for fourteen years and continue to refresh the stock each season.

The bearded iris collection typically holds 600 to 850 named cultivars, organized into nine tall-bearded groups by letter (A-B through T-Z), plus Intermediate Bearded, Border Bearded, and Aril Bred lines, and a Historic Iris section with fifty-two pre-1950s cultivars. The Rules grow everything outdoors in native Grand Valley soil rather than under glass, working with roughly thirty American hybridizers and avoiding stock raised east of the Mississippi. Orders ship as rhizomes, not bulbs, to customers across the contiguous forty-eight states, with California, Texas, Maine, and Colorado consistently the strongest markets. Iris rhizomes ship from July 15 through September 1, daylilies from May 1 through September 1, all by USPS Priority Mail. Shipping is free at $85 or above; smaller orders pay $13.50.
