Ion Exchange, Inc. — also known as Ion Exchange Native Seed and Plant Nursery — is a family-run native seed and perennial plant company based in Allamakee County in northeast Iowa. Founded in 1988 by soil scientist Howard Bright and his wife Donna, the company began on a 160-acre parcel along the Yellow River and has grown into a multi-line supplier of wildflowers, native grasses, rushes, sedges, and CRP (Conservation Reserve Program) seed mixes for Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Operations are anchored at the Bright family’s Allamakee County farm, where seed cleaning, plug production, and bulk packaging all take place. The brand serves both wholesale nursery customers and retail gardeners through its online storefront and a long-standing phone-order tradition.
Family Background and Founding Story
Howard Bright grew up in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in East Tennessee, absorbing plant knowledge from his family of dirt farmers. After graduating from the University of Tennessee in 1970, he moved to Iowa City, Iowa, and married Donna in 1976. The couple held steady civil-service jobs — Howard as a soil scientist and later district conservationist with the Soil Conservation Service, Donna in personnel at a quarry operation — but by 1980 both wanted a self-directed life on the land. In 1984 a vacation detour to Clayton, Iowa on the Mississippi River led them to a six-month-old newspaper ad for 160 acres on the Yellow River with 50,000 pine trees. Despite warnings from realtor Chuck Brooks that the timber had been logged and only 35 acres of cropland remained, the Brights bought the property. Howard resigned from the Soil Conservation Service in May 1988 after twenty years of service, and the family moved into a log cabin built from salvaged telegraph poles in July of that year. With no salaries coming in, Howard and Donna began collecting native plant seeds from remnant prairies and wetlands across Iowa — an ecosystem that once covered more than ninety percent of the state and now occupies less than one percent. The company name fuses Howard’s soil-science background (the ion exchange process within the soil matrix) with the memory of a neighboring town called Ion, washed away in a 1916 flood.
Product Lines and Native Plant Inventory
Ion Exchange organizes its catalog into five primary native plant categories plus several derived product lines. Forbs / Wildflowers covers aster, borage, legume, and mint family natives; Native Grasses splits into cool-season and warm-season groups, with featured prairie species such as Big Bluestem, Little Bluestem, Indiangrass, Switchgrass, Sideoats Grama, June Grass, and Sweet Grass; Native Rushes and Native Sedges supply wetland and streambank projects with species including Soft Rush, Torrey’s Rush, Inland Rush, Fox Sedge, Pennsylvania Sedge, and Lake Sedge. The CRP catalog is divided into Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin state-specific subpages, each carrying mixes aligned to USDA Farm Service Agency practice codes CP2, CP23, CP25, CP33, and CP42. Each mix is quantified in PLS pounds per acre (Pure Live Seed), with named entries such as Iowa CP25 Diversity Mix, Minnesota CP42 Premium Pollinator Mix, and Wisconsin CP25 Dry Interseed Mix. The BUY PLANTS channel ships live plants in 84 Nova plug trays — conical cells measuring about 1 1/8 inch in diameter by 2 1/8 inches deep with interior ridges that direct roots downward and prevent the wrapping common in smooth-sided pots. Floating Islands rounds out the catalog as a Bio Islands product line aimed at pond, lake, and retention-basin restoration.
CRP Partnerships and Restoration Programs
Ion Exchange is one of three coordinating partners of the Iowa Prairie Partner Program, run jointly with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Pheasants Forever, and the Iowa Native Plant Growers Association. Under this program, eligible Iowa landowners can receive a voucher covering up to half of the cost of approved seed or plant plug orders; applicants first request a quote from Ion Exchange and submit it to their area Private Lands Biologist for approval. The company plays a dual role in the Iowa CRP market as both a custom mix formulator and a source-identified native seed supplier. Minnesota and Wisconsin subpages carry their own CP25 and CP42 mixes, with the Minnesota Monarch Pollinator Mix explicitly tuned to monarch butterfly migration stopovers. Beyond CRP work, the company supports urban butterfly gardens and rain gardens, and Howard Bright — known by his nickname Earthyman — maintains an extensive free video library covering planting, harvesting, controlled burns, greenhouse transplanting, and native seed cleaning. Wholesale pricing is reserved for nursery, garden center, design, and installation companies with valid business credentials.
Ordering, Shipping, and Customer Policies
Customers place orders through the online storefront, by phone, or via downloadable PDF order forms. Native seed ships Monday through Friday by UPS Ground; live plants ship Monday through Wednesday only, between May and December depending on weather, to avoid weekend warehouse heat exposure. A minimum shipping charge of fifteen dollars applies per shipment, and plants carry an additional fifteen percent handling fee. Return policy: standard seed mixes and individual species in original sealed packaging may be returned within thirty days of purchase, subject to a twenty-five percent restocking fee; custom seed mixes and all shipped plants are non-returnable. Order cancellations also incur a twenty-five percent fee. The company ships to the continental United States excluding California and to Canada, with restrictions on certain products. All transactions are processed through the Authorize.Net Verified Merchant Seal gateway using 128-bit SSL encryption and PCI DSS compliant infrastructure. A long-running “Earthyman’s Free Advice” tradition lets customers call or email questions about site selection, soil preparation, bloom timing, and maintenance at no extra cost.
