About the Institution

The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, established in 1816 by botanist Charles Moore, sits on the southern shore of Sydney Harbour along Mrs Macquaries Road. It serves as the flagship of the Botanic Gardens of Sydney, a network spanning three botanic gardens and The Domain — collectively housing one of Australia’s most significant plant conservation programs.

Plant Conservation

As a cornerstone of Australian plant conservation, the Australian Plantbank stores seeds and living materials of threatened native species from across the country, conducting research into ex-situ preservation and reintroduction. Aligned with the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), the gardens prioritize the protection of over 1,700 endangered Australian plant species, with living displays showcasing the nation’s unique botanical diversity.

Scientific Research and Herbarium

The National Herbarium of New South Wales holds more than 1.4 million plant specimens, including approximately 800 collected by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander during Captain James Cook’s first Pacific voyage in 1770. The collection also features works by pioneering colonial botanists such as Louisa Atkinson. Scientific services include plant identification, pathology diagnosis, and public enquiries supporting both researchers and home gardeners.

Living Collections

Each garden within the network offers distinct living collections: the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney showcases tropical rainforest and harbour-side gardens; Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah specializes in temperate and alpine species; and Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan focuses on plants from Australia’s arid and semi-arid regions. Each site acknowledges Traditional Custodians, with names drawn from Gadigal, Dharug, and Dharawal peoples.

Education and Public Programs

The gardens offer diverse educational programs for all ages: school nature programs, family园艺 workshops, Aboriginal cultural tours, and scientific illustration classes. The Calyx exhibition space hosts rotating plant-themed exhibitions blending art, science, and horticulture. With over 50 cultural events annually and more than one million visitors, the gardens are one of Sydney’s most beloved green spaces.
