Historical Evolution
The Heilbronn-Hohenlohe Friends Circle of the German Rose Society — The Freundeskreis Heilbronn-Hohenlohe is a regional circle of the Deutsche Rosengesellschaft e.V. (German Rose Society, founded 1883) covering the Heilbronn and Hohenlohe areas of northern Baden-Württemberg. It was founded on 9 April 1989 by Heinz Kämmer and Lina Brenner and celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2019. Its aim is to bring together rose enthusiasts from a roughly 60-kilometre radius around Heilbronn so that they can exchange notes on old and new cultivars and keep roses and gardening as a long-standing hobby.
Organisation and Membership
A small regional friends circle — The circle operates as a loosely organised Freundeskreis under the umbrella of the national society, with day-to-day matters looked after by a few volunteers rather than paid staff. Monthly meetings are held at Gasthaus Mühlau, Schloßstraße 6 in Talheim (74388), and both members and visitors are welcome. Communication with members runs through group e-mails and an Instagram account (@Rosenfreunde.hn_hohenlohe); prospective members may attend as guests before deciding whether to join.
Monthly Meetings and the Annual Programme
A Sunday rhythm of lunch and talks — Most months the circle meets on a Sunday: a communal lunch at 12:00 in Talheim is followed by a 14:00 lecture on a rose- or garden-related topic. Subjects range from pruning and modern breeding to ecological management, companion plants, sustainable horticulture and the seasonal life of a garden. Speakers in 2026 include Thomas Proll of Kordes-Rosen on 20th- and 21st-century rose breeding, Manfred Orth on the sustainable management of the Eltville Rosengarten, and Dr. Petra Lorenz on the botany of roses in the northern hemisphere. A two-day Rosencafé is held at the Botanischer Obstgarten in Heilbronn at the end of May.
Field Trips and the Annual Rose Tour
Day excursions and a multi-day tour abroad — Every year the circle organises several day trips plus one longer tour abroad. Day trips focus on rose gardens, nurseries and private gardens within reach — 2026 outings include the Schneeglöckchenmarkt at Mannheim’s Luisenpark, the Braike teaching and trial garden in Nürtingen, the Botanischer Garten Erlangen and the Augustin perennial nursery in Effeltrich. The annual multi-day tour typically runs for around six days; in June 2025 members visited English gardens including Sissinghurst and Great Dixter, and the previous year explored private gardens and nurseries in Alsace and southern Baden.
Rose Knowledge and External Resources
Linking members to the wider rose world — The Grünes Netzwerk (Green Network) section collects recommendations to rose-related resources both local and national: the parent Deutsche Rosengesellschaft for varieties, data and events; the Botanischer Obstgarten in Heilbronn, the Weinsberger Rosenkulturen nursery and the Bavarian teaching and trial garden at Veitshöchheim for in-person visits; and the Wissenswertes page, which explains the ADR-Rosen (Allgemeine Deutsche Rosenprüfung) trial system and points to regional, foreign and companion-plant sources of healthy, well-suited rose cultivars.
