A UK Trade Association for the Horticultural Industry

The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) is one of the most established trade associations for the UK horticultural industry. Founded in 1899 and registered in London as a company limited by guarantee (company number 00169606), HTA represents garden retailers, growers, manufacturers and suppliers, landscapers and service providers across the United Kingdom.

The association represents members’ interests to government and media, runs the long-running National Garden Gift Card scheme, and provides market reports, training and partnership programmes to help its members grow their businesses.

Over a Century of History and the National Garden Gift Card

Established in 1899, HTA has been serving the UK horticultural industry for more than 120 years. Within HTA sits the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL), a dedicated division for landscape design and construction professionals and one of the main professional bodies for the UK landscape sector.

The National Garden Gift Card (NGGC), launched in 1962, is the longest-running garden consumer gift card programme in the UK. It drives roughly two million visits to garden centres and retail nurseries each year, and remains a familiar gift choice for British gardeners.

Five Membership Categories and Member Services

HTA offers five membership categories: Retailer Membership, Grower Membership, Landscaper Membership (APL), Manufacturer & Supplier Membership, and Associate Membership. Each category comes with its own set of benefits and member services.

Member services include the HTA eLearning Hub, the Preferred Partners purchasing scheme and monthly industry market reports. The association also runs regional networking events, policy webinars, training workshops and trade shows that are central to the day-to-day operation of the UK horticultural supply chain.

Industry Research and Policy Advocacy

HTA’s Environmental Horticulture Manifesto sets out ten policy priorities for any future UK government, covering urban greening, trees and urban heat, plant health and sustainable practice. The association works closely with Defra and other UK environmental horticulture groups.

On trade policy, HTA was one of the leading voices in securing the UK-EU Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement reached on 19 May 2025, which for the first time explicitly covers plants and plant products and is widely seen as one of the most significant trade developments for the industry in a decade.

Annual Conference and Industry Events

HTA runs the annual Horticulture Conference, the flagship gathering for the UK horticultural supply chain. The 2026 conference was held at the Barbican Centre in London and brings together industry leaders for a day of discussion and networking. The calendar also includes the APL Awards, regional member events and policy webinars.

HTA is also involved in Plant Healthy, the Environmental Horticulture group and the Broad Horizons talent development programme, working with UK government and industry partners to develop the next generation of horticulture professionals.
