The Gesellschaft Schweizerischer Rosenfreunde (GSRF), the Swiss Rose Friends Society, is a nationwide association of rose enthusiasts dedicated to promoting Swiss-bred roses and garden-visit culture; its current annual theme “Schweizer Rosen” highlights rose cultivars bred within Switzerland, while its Offene Gärten (Open Gardens) program invites members to open their private gardens to fellow enthusiasts throughout the bloom season.
About the Society
Headquartered in Switzerland, GSRF is led by a board covering the presidency, vice presidency, protocol, treasury and editorial roles, and operates through a network of regional rose groups including Aargau, Basel Regio, Bern and March-Glarnerland. These regional groups form the backbone of the society, organizing local meetings, garden tours and rose-related events, while members retain the freedom to attend activities hosted by any regional group across the German- and French-speaking parts of the country.
Core Activities
The society’s annual program is built around five pillars: garden inspiration for personal plots, hands-on training, garden travel, visits to specialist nurseries and member-to-member social events. Practical pruning courses (Schnittkurs) cover spring care, summer deadheading and autumn cutting techniques; domestic and international garden tours and botanical excursions are organized seasonally; members visit private gardens and rose-specialist nurseries; social gatherings such as summer festivals bring members together; and the Offene Gärten program schedules garden openings from late June through late August so members can experience cultivation techniques and variety choices in real garden settings.
Publications and Membership
GSRF publishes two periodicals for its members. Rosenblatt is the monthly newsletter carrying society news, regional group announcements, hands-on cultivation tips and member contributions. Rosa Helvetica is the annual yearbook presenting in-depth articles on Swiss rose breeding, cultivar history and horticultural technique, and is regarded as one of the most important German-language references on Swiss rose culture. Beyond publications, members can take part in the society’s rose photography competition, annual meeting (Jahrestagung), honorary membership program and the annual themed variety selection, building a continuous calendar of engagement throughout the year.
Annual Swiss Rose Showcase
The society’s “Schweizer Rosen” annual theme showcases four rose cultivars bred or selected by Swiss growers. From Aargau, ‘André’ (bred by Huber, introduced 2017, bed rose) opens in warm ochre-yellow with paler edges and stands 60 to 90 cm tall, pairing well with blue, violet or white perennials. From Thurgau, ‘Leilani’ (bred by Sharlene Sutter, introduced 2016, shrub rose) carries large creamy-yellow flowers edged in pink on 110 cm stems, with disease-resistant dark green foliage. From Innerschweiz, ‘Schloss Haldenstein’ (bred by Hans Wüest, introduced 2003 at Haldenstein Castle near Chur, climbing rose) bears fragrant warm-red flowers 17 to 25 petals in clusters and climbs to roughly five meters, suiting open rose arches and well-ventilated garden structures. Also bred by Huber, the shrub rose ‘Domenikus’ is noted for its yellow buds that fade to nearly white at the petal edges while holding form through rain.
