County Flora)

Barcode of Life Data Systems(BOLD)与多个国际权威植物名录互通:包括「Catalog of Life」、被子植物系统发育组 APG(Angiosperm Phylogeny Group)及「The Plant List」(由英国皇家植物园 Kew 与密苏里植物园合作维护)。

数据引用规范在站点的「How to cite Flora Ontario」页面给出:Newmaster, S.G. and S. Ragupathy (2012). Maintainers and institutional setting

Flora Ontario Integrated Botanical Information System (FOIBIS) is hosted and maintained at the BIO-OAC Herbarium, Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, College of Biological Science, University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada. The project is led by Dr. Steven Newmaster and Dr. Subramanyam Ragupathy. The system consolidates approximately 5,456 species of vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens naturalized in the province of Ontario, together with several thousand synonyms from the Ontario Plant List (Newmaster et al. 2005), and also serves as the data backbone for the 2012 monograph “Flora Ontario” by Newmaster and Ragupathy.

Search interface and species-level data fields

FOIBIS exposes three search entry points: genus, genus + species, and English common name, alongside full browse views organized by Latin name, English common name and French common name. Each species record carries family, genus and species names, scientific synonyms, up to two English common names, a French name when available, vegetation code, Bayer code, status codes for rarity / alien / native, life form and life cycle indicators, medicinal notes, web picture links, plus the latest phytogeographic and rarity assessment.

County floras across Ontario (47 administrative regions)

From FOIBIS Phase II (2012) the system extends into an interactive county-level flora layer covering 47 Ontario regions: Algoma, Brant, Bruce, Cochrane, Dufferin, Durham, Elgin, Essex, Fontenac, Grey, Haldimand, Haliburton, Halton, Hamilton, Hastings, Huron, Kenora, Kent, Lambton, Lanark, Leeds, Lennox, Manitoulin, Middlesex, Muskoka, Niagara, Nipissing, Northumberland, Ottawa, Parry Sound, Peel, Perth, Peterborough, Prescott, Prince Edward, Rainy River, Renfrew, Simcoe, Stormont, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Toronto, Victoria, Waterloo, Wellington and York. Users can download any county list with updated nomenclature from FOIBIS, or submit their own county lists and individual specimen records to become acknowledged Flora Ontario contributors.

Maintenance pipeline and international database integration

The species list is updated continuously through the group’s “Barcoding the Plants of Canada” campaign, and integrates via the Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD) with several international plant name registers, including the Catalogue of Life, the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG), and The Plant List (a collaboration between Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Missouri Botanical Garden). The last major dataset refresh was published in 2012, with subsequent taxonomic and nomenclatural updates flowing through the BOLD pipeline to keep FOIBIS aligned with the global plant classification backbone.

Contact and citation guidance

Questions concerning nomenclature updates, species records or collaborative research can be directed to Dr. Steven Newmaster or Dr. Subramanyam Ragupathy through the University of Guelph’s official channels. The recommended citation is: Newmaster, S.G. and S. Ragupathy (2012). Flora Ontario – Integrated Botanical Information System (FOIBIS), Phase I. University of Guelph, Canada. The database is operated by the BIO Herbarium at the University of Guelph as a long-running open academic resource; the detailed species-level data fields are documented on the official project site.
