Project Background and Objectives

The Subject Database of China Plant (中国科学院中国植物主题数据库) is a project funded by the National Basic Science Data Sharing Service Network. It was jointly developed by the Institute of Botany and the Kunming Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, both possessing profound botanical accumulations and rich specialized database resources. Built upon the Species 2000 China Node and the Catalogue of China Flora, the database integrates plant photographs, flora literature records, fossil plant catalogues and specimens, as well as medicinal plant databases, emphasizing data standardization and normalization to provide authoritative data support for botanical research and education.

Database System and Data Scale

The basic data volume after system completion is as follows:

(1) Plant Name Database: 155,290 records (including family, genus, species and infraspecific names; Species 2000 China Node contributes 110,449 records, and the Catalogue of China Flora contributes 44,841 records).

(2) Plant Image Database: 18,338 species with a total of 1,009,386 images (China Plant Image Library: 283,317 images; Chinese Natural Herbarium: 726,069 images).

(3) Botanical Literature Database: A total of 3,652,312 name-page records (BHL China Node: 129,105 records; BHL US Node: 3,523,207 records).

(4) Medicinal Plant Database: 11,987 species with 22,562 records.

(5) Paleobotanical Fossil Catalogue Database: 1,093 records, including 953 records from “Fossil Pteridophytes of China” (2010) and 140 records from “China Coal Ball Plants” (2009).

(6) Paleobotanical Fossil Specimen Database: 312 names with 662 specimens.

Data Retrieval and Tool Services

The database provides multi-dimensional data retrieval services covering multiple sub-databases including the China Plant Name Database, China Plant Family and Genus Table, China Plant Literature Database, China Plant Image Database, Illustrated Botanical Dictionary Database, Enhanced Medicinal Plant Database, Ethnic Medicinal Plant Database, Paleobotanical Fossil Database, and Paleobotanical Catalogue Database. Additionally, it offers practical tools such as the China Administrative Division Change Query Tool, Plant Family-Genus-Species Latest Classification System Matching Tool, Catalogue Batch Automatic Verification Service, Plant Dictionary APP, and China Wild Bird Image Recognition.

Partner Websites and Resource Sharing

The database has established cooperation with multiple authoritative botanical institutions domestically and internationally. Domestic partner websites include the Institute of Botany CAS, Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Kunming Institute of Botany, South China Botanical Garden, Wuhan Botanical Garden, Guangxi Institute of Botany, and major platforms such as the China Digital Herbarium, China Plant Species Information Database, Species 2000 China Node, and Chinese Natural Herbarium. International partners include The Plant List, GBIF, EOL, Species 2000, IPNI, and Atlas of Living Australia.

System Architecture and Data Integration

Through data interlinking, the species comprehensive information page can integrate different data types and display them centrally on a single page. Users can obtain comprehensive information about a species—including taxonomic names, photographs, literature records, fossil specimens, and medicinal value—on one unified page. The overall system design and development were completed by the team at the Institute of Botany CAS, with the construction team led by Cui Jinzhong (Project Leader) and including Qin Haining, Wang Lisong, Liu Fenghong, Xu Kexue, Chen Bin, Li Min, Yu Shengxiang, Wang Yuhua, Zhuang Huifu, and Xu Zhepíng.

Contact Information and User Services

The database provides data sharing services for researchers, educators, and plant enthusiasts. Users can access all database resources through the official website (http://www.plant.csdb.cn/). The system continues to update the latest botanical news and data resources, promoting open sharing and deep application of botanical scientific data.
