Brand Background

Van Ness Water Gardens is a family-run aquatic plant and koi nursery located in Upland, California. The business traces its origin to the early 1930s, when founders Robert and Edith Van Ness established a series of ponds in the San Antonio Heights foothills at the base of Mount Baldy and printed their first water-garden catalog in 1932. The gardens passed to Edith’s cousin Ted Uber and his family in 1952, and third-generation owners Bill and Carolyn Uber assumed management in 1974 before completing the purchase in 1976. Current principal William C. Uber holds a certificate in Fish Health Management from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. The nursery operates as a grower, wholesaler, retailer and mail-order supplier with international reach, having shipped water lily varieties to customers that historically included the Imperial Palace in Japan and the Presidential Palace in Zaire.

Core Business

The nursery serves home gardeners, hobbyists, landscape architects and commercial projects with a one-stop selection of aquatic plants, ornamental fish, pond construction materials and water-quality maintenance supplies. The plant range spans eight major groups, including hardy water lilies, tropical day and night bloomers, lotus, bog and marginal plants, oxygenating grasses, water iris, creeping plants and floating aquatics. The livestock range covers koi, goldfish, pond frogs, snails and supporting fish foods, medicines and protective equipment. Construction and maintenance offerings include pond liners, pumps, filtration systems, lighting, decor, nets and an array of startup chemicals and water-quality products.

Product and Publication Lineup

Rather than a conventional catalog, the company has published the magazine-format Water Visions every year since 1932, with 1944 the only wartime exception when a price list substituted for the printed issue. In 1958 the nursery introduced thirteen tropical water lilies hybridized by Martin Randig of San Bernardino, including long-developed varieties such as Leopardess (1931) and Red Flare (1938), a release that propelled the firm into worldwide water-garden trade. Featured modern introductions include Green Smoke, King of the Blues, Tina and Makenna. The companion reference book Water Gardening Basics, authored by third-generation principal William C. Uber, is widely used as an introductory guide for new water-garden enthusiasts.

Customer Service and Consulting

The nursery welcomes school groups, scout troops, garden clubs and senior citizen associations for guided tours, and offers paid consultation services to landscape architects, estate managers, golf course and park superintendents, and individual homeowners. Topics covered include site selection, ecological balance, water chemistry, water feature construction, pond repair and restoration, fish health, drought and wetland conditions, and the use of algaecides and herbicides. William C. Uber is a past president of the Inland Chapter of the California Association of Nurserymen and has served as a guest lecturer at Cal Poly Pomona, UCLA, UC Riverside and local community colleges.
