WeedAlert、Telopea

Cycad Pages

The World List of Cycads Plants of the World Online 与 The Plant List 为准。

Mission and Host Institution

PlantNET (The NSW Plant Information Network System) is a public plant-information service hosted by the National Herbarium of New South Wales, part of the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust, Sydney. The platform was first released in January 1999 and currently runs as version 2.0; it provides searchable information on the names, distribution and conservation status of New South Wales plants, along with identification keys, descriptions, images and illustrations. The same institutional arrangement also publishes Telopea, the peer-reviewed journal of plant systematics.

Search Modules and Data Coverage

PlantNET is built from several complementary modules. NSWplants indexes accepted names and synonyms and can be filtered by botanical subdivision; Spatial Search returns species lists for user-defined latitude–longitude boxes drawn over the state, using specimen records lodged at the National Herbarium; traditional dichotomous keys are derived from the printed Flora of New South Wales volumes. Database staff update name records and specimen data daily, while images and descriptive text are reviewed on a regular cycle; despite these efforts the project is presented as a working scientific resource and not as a fully audited authority.

FloraOnline and the Flora Treatment

FloraOnline is PlantNET’s central taxonomic module. Its content derives from the printed Flora of New South Wales series published by UNSW Press, augmented with electronic records maintained by the National Herbarium. The classification of flowering-plant families broadly follows the Australian Plant Census (APC), which aligns with the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group framework; the National Herbarium is migrating the catalogue from APG III to APG IV, and the resulting rearrangement of families and genera will be reflected in FloraOnline as keys and descriptions are revised. Distribution maps are generated from herbarium specimens with their geocodes and are therefore subject to the same identification and geocoding caveats noted elsewhere on the site.

WeedAlert, EucaLink, WattleWeb and Telopea

Several specialist sites are hosted within the PlantNET suite. WeedAlert tracks new distributional records of naturalised plants in New South Wales over the last one, three or twelve months; the Casuarinaceae treatment, EucaLink and WattleWeb (the Acacia specialist site) were integrated between 2000 and 2001. Telopea is the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney’s open-access, peer-reviewed journal of plant systematics, published electronically since 2012 and migrated to the Sydney Open Journals platform from 2024, while remaining discoverable from PlantNET’s Telopea index.

The Cycad Pages and Other Hosted Databases

The Cycad Pages, an individual-species treatment originally launched in 1989 by National Herbarium botanist Ken Hill, were incorporated into the platform as one of the PlantNet modules in 2001; they collate information from The World List of Cycads at species level, covering nomenclature, distribution, morphology and conservation status. The Cycad Pages are no longer actively maintained and are now archived as a historical reference; for current taxonomy users are directed to Plants of the World Online and the Australian Plant Census. The broader platform also hosts the Australian Freshwater Algae dataset and other biodiversity resources linked from the PlantNET home page.
