Project Background and Consortium
The Scientific Database of China Plant Species (DCP) is a collaborative project built by the Kunming Institute of Botany, the Institute of Botany, the Wuhan Botanical Garden, and the South China Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. These institutions possess profound botanical accumulations and rich specialized database resources. The database fully utilizes theories and methods from botany, plant resources, and plant geography, built through top-level design with contributions from botanical experts. Established according to the “Reference Database Construction Standards” of the CAS Scientific Database, its content is based primarily on the Catalogue of China Flora and its English counterpart, the Flora of China.
Database System and Coverage Scale
The database covers approximately 300+ families, 3,400+ genera, and 31,000+ species of higher plants, basically encompassing the major higher plant groups distributed in China. The system integrates multi-dimensional data including standard plant names, basic information, systematic taxonomic information, ecological information, physiological and biochemical trait descriptions, habitat and distribution information, literature records, atlases and images, microstructure and chromosome data. Through data interlinking, the species comprehensive information page displays different data types in an integrated view, providing users with complete species information.
Major Sub-Databases
The database comprises multiple specialized sub-databases forming a comprehensive plant information system. The Medicinal Plant Database covers information on over 8,000 medicinal plant species and data from more than 40 ethnic medicinal usage systems, focusing on organizing and summarizing traditional medicinal knowledge. The Ornamental Plant Database contains approximately 5,000 cultivated and wild ornamental plant species, including Chinese names, Latin scientific names, synonyms, common names, basic morphological descriptions, geographic distribution, ecological environment, resource abundance, cultivation techniques, major genetic traits, and ornamental characteristics, with 60% accompanied by color photographs. The Edible Plant Database collects approximately 1,000 wild edible plant species, including general biological information, suitable cultivation and propagation techniques, major genetic traits, nutritional value indicators of wild vegetables, and folk utilization knowledge, with 80% featuring color photographs.
Specialized Databases and Regional Features
The database also hosts several specialized sub-databases. The Economic Plant Database records basic information on various economic plant species. The Plant Geographic Distribution Database provides spatial distribution data of species. The Rare and Endangered Plant Database documents protected rare and endangered species. The Yunnan Higher Plant Database focuses on the rich higher plant resources of Yunnan Province. The Plant Atlas Database and Plant Microstructure Atlas Query provide botanical morphological visualization data. The Northwest Yunnan Important and Useful Plant Database covers 3,085 useful plant species from the northwest Yunnan region, encompassing medicinal, edible, fiber, timber, tannin extract, important industrial raw materials, ornamental, and landscaping uses, providing data guidance for the rational development and conservation of regional strategic biological resources.
Data Standards and Cooperation Network
The database construction follows strict data standards and specifications. The core content of the Plant Species Cataloguing Database includes six major modules: species taxonomic hierarchy information, biological information, synonym and literature information, habitat and distribution information, rare and endemic species information, and utilization value information. Data sources are scientifically authoritative, with annotations primarily derived from the Catalogue of China Flora, Flora of China, and published academic papers. The database has established cooperation links with multiple domestic and international botanical data platforms, jointly promoting open sharing and deep application of botanical scientific data.
Access Methods and User Services
The database provides data sharing services for researchers, educators, and plant enthusiasts. Users can access all database resources through the official website to perform plant species information retrieval, data querying, and downloads. The system continuously updates the latest botanical research findings and data resources, providing users with convenient and efficient botanical scientific data services.
