Thrive

History and Purpose

Thrive traces its history to 1979, when it began in Frome as the Society for Horticultural Therapy and Rural Training. Founded by horticulturist Chris Underhill, the organisation set out to connect horticulture with health and has developed into a UK charity supporting people living with disability, ill health, isolation, disadvantage or vulnerability.

Social and Therapeutic Horticulture

Thrive uses Social and Therapeutic Horticulture, or STH, to support physical and mental health, communication and thinking skills. Its information explains that gardening can provide purpose and achievement, encourage exercise and learning, strengthen connections with nature and create opportunities to connect with other people.

Programmes and Services

Therapeutic programmes operate at Thrive garden sites in London, Reading and Birmingham, as well as in care homes, public spaces, schools and community projects. Thrive also provides Get Gardening resources, a Gardening Club, education in STH and training and consultancy for people and organisations interested in therapeutic, social or developmental uses of horticulture.

Evidence and Advocacy

Thrive reports a growing evidence base for STH, including a review identifying more than 130 relevant articles across over 40 journals and a separate evidence summary citing 75 research papers on social prescribing and the natural environment. It also acknowledges limitations in parts of the literature and advocates for clearer standards, practitioner development and recognition of STH within health and social care.

Vision and Involvement

Thrive’s 2022–2027 strategic plan aims to bring health and horticulture closer together so that more people can experience positive outcomes through STH. The charity works through programmes, training, information, partnerships and advocacy, and welcomes support through donations, volunteering, learning and community participation described on its current site.
