Helping Gardeners Grow Their Dreams since 1997″(自 1997 年起助力园丁实现种植梦想),并以”Gardening on the Web since 1997″作为页脚印记,三十年间保持完全免费、无需注册即可访问核心内容的运营模式。
(Selecting and Preparing the Planting Site)、植物群组索引(Plant Indexes by Specific Needs)、园林专用植物(Plants for Specific Gardens)、室内植物(House Plants)、植物购买指南(Plant Buying Guides)、植物抗寒区(USDA Plant Hardiness Zones)、害虫与问题(Pests and Problems)、室内播种(Indoor Seed Starting)、园林工具护理(Garden Tools)、花园词汇表(Garden Glossary)、植物护理图标系统(Plant Care Icon System)以及园艺百科全书(Garden Encyclopedia)。
The Gardener’s Forum
Site Origins and Founding Background
The Garden Helper is a long-running free gardening resource portal established in 1997 by an American gardener based in the Pacific Northwest. The site has carried the same tagline, “Helping Gardeners Grow Their Dreams since 1997,” for nearly three decades and continues to publish under the signature “Gardening on the Web since 1997.” What began as a personal notebook of soil amendments, slug battles and seasonal to-do lists slowly grew into a searchable gardening encyclopedia, and in the early 2000s the founder added The Gardener’s Forum so that encyclopedia entries and reader questions could live side by side. The combined “encyclopedia plus forum plus monthly calendar” structure remains the defining feature of the site today.
Content Sections and the Gardening 101 Curriculum
All core pages are organized under the Gardening 101 learning track, beginning with the Gardener’s Forum and Forum Archive, then moving through the Calendar of Gardening Tasks, July Gardening, Gardening Basics, Selecting and Preparing the Planting Site, Plant Indexes by Specific Needs, Plants for Specific Gardens, House Plants, Plant Buying Guides, USDA Plant Hardiness Zones, Pests and Problems, Indoor Seed Starting, Garden Tools, Garden Glossary, Plant Care Icon System and the full Garden Encyclopedia. Every section can be read on its own, and a top navigation bar lets readers hop between beginner lessons, plant directories and troubleshooting charts in a single click.
Gardening Calendar and Plant Index System
The site uses the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map as its reference scale and dedicates a separate page to each of the twelve months, listing what should be planted, pruned, fertilized or left alone in January through December, with extra notes for USDA Zones 7 and 8 gardeners. Plant directories are indexed along two axes at once: by plant type (annuals, perennials, bulbs, carnivorous plants, vines, shrubs, trees, foliage house plants, flowering house plants, vegetables, herbs) and by growing environment (full sun, partial shade, shade, acidic soil, alkaline soil, drought tolerant, bog loving, hardy zones). The Plant Care Icon System overlays hardiness zones, mature height, growth habit and quick notes onto each listing so that gardeners can compare a dozen plants at a glance.
Pest Management and Community Q&A
The Troubleshooting page groups common house plant issues into symptom-to-cause tables covering brown leaf edges, browning leaf tips, yellowing leaves, leggy growth and flower drop, with each row pointing to likely causes such as low humidity, fertilizer burn, hard water or pesticide spray damage. The Good Bugs and Bugs pages document beneficial insects (lady beetles, lacewings, parasitic wasps, syrphid flies, tachinid flies, yellowjackets, assassin bugs) and common pests (aphids, spider mites, scale insects, slugs, mosquitoes, cabbage worms), and pair every entry with a list of companion plants that attract or repel them. The Gardener’s Forum, launched in 1997, has now accumulated more than 50,000 discussion threads, making it one of the densest long-running gardening Q&A archives on the open web.
Garden Tools and the Kids Gardening Track
The Garden Tools section breaks household gardening equipment into four families (digging shovels and spades, cultivating rakes and hoes, pruning shears and loppers, watering cans and irrigation lines), explaining the intended use, routine maintenance and seasonal care for each. The Tool Care page shares a classic DIY rust-prevention tip: filling a five-gallon bucket with builder’s sand, pouring in a quart of fresh motor oil and stabbing tools in and out of the sand after every use. The Kid Garden track is written for parents gardening with small children and emphasizes four rules (short attention spans, small achievable tasks, kid-sized tools, zero access to chemicals), then pairs them with five age-appropriate tasks (digging holes, mixing soil, watering, raking leaves, choosing seedlings) and a list of instant-gratification plants such as sunflowers, cherry tomatoes and scented herbs.
