Background
The Reinhard Böttger Gentian Garden is a private alpine-plant cultivation site located within the allotment “Am Wiesenweg” in the Mitteldorf district of Stollberg/Erzgebirge, on the northern edge of the Erzgebirge range in Saxony, Germany, at roughly 440 m above sea level. It is run as the personal homepage of gardener Reinhard Böttger, who has been tending the collection continuously since the mid-1980s; the website explicitly states that it serves no commercial purpose.
Owner and Garden
Reinhard Böttger was born in Stollberg/Erzgebirge, and his interest in alpine plants grew out of skiing and mountain hiking. From the mid-1980s he began purchasing and cultivating Alpine and East-Asian alpines at traditional plant markets in what was then East Germany. The garden sits on the northern edge of the Erzgebirge at about 440 m elevation, where cool, moist winters and mild summers provide a favourable microclimate for gentians and other high-elevation flora. Böttger propagates both by seed and vegetatively, preferring vegetative propagation to keep the mother plant’s traits stable.
Gentian Specialty
The nursery’s core specialty is the stemless gentians (Stengellose Enziane, the Gentiana acaulis and G. clusii group) and the West-China autumn-flowering gentians (MONOPODIAE, Westchinesische Schmuckenziane), including wild species such as Gentiana farreri, G. hexaphylla, G. sino-ornata and their near relatives. Böttger is particularly devoted to the West-China autumn group, where he keeps collecting rare wild forms and dwarf cultivars, and has begun selecting and naming his own lines under the breeder code “RB” (Reinhard Böttger). His publicly listed own selections include Gentiana clusii ‘ROSENROT’RB (a pink-tongued clone) and Gentiana Hybr. ‘Mozart’RB.
Alpine Plant Collection
Beyond gentians the nursery cultivates a range of European and Asian alpines, including Alpine primroses (Primula, with English Show-Aurikeln as a separate breeding line), alpine columbines (Aquilegia), arnica (Arnica), pinks (Dianthus), whitlowgrasses (Draba), avens (Geum), yellow wild houseleeks (Sempervivum), and small American irises. A separate section of the site documents Böttger’s philatelic collection of plant-themed stamps, including Austrian issues featuring alpine plants that he helped bring into circulation.
Ordering and Visits
Ordering: the nursery charges 6.90 euros for postage at the lowest German postal weight class, accepts prepayment only (long-standing customers may pay on invoice), and prefers visitors to pick up plants in person by appointment. Recommended visiting windows for on-site selection are April to early May (stemless gentians and primroses in flower), mid-May to June (arnica, pinks and Sempervivum), and July to August (wild species and early cultivars of the West-China autumn gentians). The owner notes that not every species pictured in the catalogue is available as a potted plant, since slow growers may not yet have multiplied to saleable size.
