From Walled Garden to Independent Charity

Bridewell Gardens is based in rural West Oxfordshire. Its walled garden was built in the 1880s and later fell into disrepair after the First World War. The project began there in 1994 as an offshoot of Oxfordshire Mind and was among the earlier social and therapeutic horticulture projects established in the United Kingdom. Originally called Groundwork, it became an independent charity in 1998 under the name Bridewell Organic Gardens.

Social and Therapeutic Horticulture

The charity supports adults in Oxfordshire whose mental health has had a significant and sustained effect on daily life, receiving referrals from adult mental health teams, general practitioners and voluntary organisations. Purposeful activities such as sowing, weeding, pruning, harvesting and site care are combined with peer contact, routine and skilled support to rebuild confidence, self-esteem, social connection and hope. No previous gardening experience is required.

A Garden and Vineyard Through the Seasons

The site includes a cottage garden, raised beds, a knot garden, hot border, herb wheel, potager, plant nursery, polytunnel, forge and woodworking areas. In 1999 Bridewell leased a further five acres and transformed the field into a vineyard over two years, planting 1,800 Orion and Phoenix vines. Seasonal work ranges from sowing and planting in spring to harvesting and seed saving in autumn, followed by pruning and dividing perennials in winter.

Skills and Garden Produce

Activities extend beyond horticulture to cooking, carpentry, willow weaving, blacksmithing and tool maintenance, creating varied opportunities for concentration, decision-making, physical activity and teamwork. Fruit and vegetables are used in cooking, while honey, jams, chutneys and relishes are sold at events. Grapes from the vineyard are made into traditional-method sparkling wine with an English winery, linking practical learning with charitable fundraising.

Partnerships and Measured Impact

Bridewell participates in the Oxfordshire Mental Health Partnership and works with Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust and local community organisations. Its published 2024 figures report 2,197 gardening sessions, a participant age range of 20 to 68, and 5,040 volunteer hours. The core service contract covers about 45 percent of delivery costs, with fundraising and public support sustaining the remaining work of this local mental health recovery charity.
