Family History and the Garden Centre
Glendoick grew from the Cox family horticultural tradition. The official history records that Euan and Peter Cox founded the nursery in 1953, while the garden centre opened in 1973. The family business now brings together plant growing, retail, food, gardening advice and visits to the associated gardens.
Plant Hunting and Rhododendron Expertise
Three generations of Cox plant hunters helped shape Glendoick’s identity. Plants gathered from China, the Himalaya and other regions contributed to its collections of rhododendrons, azaleas, magnolias and acid-loving plants. Peter and Kenneth Cox have also bred and introduced more than 100 commercial rhododendron and azalea hybrids and written numerous horticultural books.
Woodland Gardens and Collections
Glendoick Woodland Gardens lie behind the garden centre on the southern slopes of the Sidlaw Hills and open seasonally in spring. The gardens combine woodland paths, streams, waterfalls and views with a rich display of rhododendrons, azaleas, hydrangeas, bulbs and other woodland plants. Visitors should check the official site for current dates and practical information.
Plants and Gardening Supplies
The plant department serves a range of Scottish growing conditions with trees, fruit trees and bushes, shrubs, perennials, roses, bulbs, bedding plants, houseplants and alpines. Rhododendrons and azaleas are a major speciality. The gardening department also covers composts, growing media, fertilisers, pest control, tools, seeds, bulbs, pots, supports and frost protection.
A Wider Garden Centre Experience
Beyond plants, Glendoick offers a cafe, foodhall, gifts, furniture, fashion and family activities. Its visitor information also highlights the woodland gardens, play areas and a woodland fairy trail. The official history lists awards across the garden centre, cafe, plant area and community activities, making Glendoick a destination for shopping, gardening knowledge and seasonal visits.
