About and Location
West Seattle Nursery & Garden Center (WSN) is an owner-operated independent retail nursery and garden center located on California Avenue SW in the West Seattle neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. The garden store is open daily from 9 AM to 7 PM, serving local residents and visitors with a curated plant catalog, container gardening supplies, and a welcoming gift shop. Convenient to the West Seattle Junction commercial core, the nursery is a regular weekend stop for household gardeners seeking ornamental plants, edible starters, and landscape supplies.
Founding History and Ownership
The nursery traces its roots to its previous owner Mark Smith, who began selling Christmas trees during college and spent several years managing seasonal nurseries across Seattle before launching the West Seattle Nursery brand in 1983. Through several relocations during the 1980s, the business settled at its permanent address on California Avenue SW in 1990 and has occupied the same footprint for over three decades. General manager since 2008 Marcia Bruno acquired the business in 2019, having previously led the addition of the greenhouse and gift shop expansion that opened in 2016.
Retail Catalog and Services
The retail catalog spans annuals, azaleas and rhododendrons, camellias, conifers, deciduous trees, fruits, herbs and vegetables, houseplants, Japanese maples, Northwest natives, perennials, pre-bonsai, roses, shrubs, and water plants, complemented by a gardening store carrying seed-starting supplies, a botanical pharmacy wall for organic plant care, pottery drilling, tool sharpening, a coffee bar, and an indoor gift greenhouse. The buying team includes a Certified Professional Horticulturist on the Board of Directors of the Northwest Horticultural Society, a former ISA certified arborist, a former community college horticulture instructor, and a plant pathologist and landscape maintenance professional. Free local delivery operates within West Seattle on Tuesday through Thursday, paid delivery extends to nearby ZIP codes, and tool sharpening is collected weekly by an external craftsman.
Education and Community Engagement
The nursery hosts ongoing free and low-cost classes covering Pacific Northwest native plant design, water-smart permaculture, citrus cultivation in the PNW climate, rose pruning, edible mushroom cultivation, container gardening, herb identification, and other regionally relevant topics. The Growing Gardeners Club welcomes children aged 4 to 12 with free membership, a monthly demonstration garden, and accompanying print and digital newsletters for families. Staff and customers regularly volunteer with Beacon Food Forest, Delridge neighborhood P-Patch community gardens, Duwamish Alive restoration work parties, Green Seattle Day tree plantings, and other neighborhood conservation projects, while the nursery contributes to local public schools and nonprofit horticultural programs each year.
Recognition and Media Coverage
The nursery has been featured repeatedly by West Seattle Blog and The Seattle Times, and was named Gold Best Gardening Store and Nursery by bestinthepnw.com in both 2024 and 2025. In February 2026 the team won the Founders Cup at the Northwest Flower & Garden Festival with the display garden Shaded from Reality, drawing headline coverage from local outlets and regional gardening channels including In The Garden With Claudia. These recognitions reflect both the destination-retail positioning of the nursery and its long-term neighborhood presence across multiple decades.
