Company Overview

HAWITA Gruppe GmbH is a German family-owned enterprise headquartered in Vechta, Lower Saxony, focused on peat extraction, growing media and substrates, plastic plant containers, and fleece propagation plugs. The group operates eight production sites in Germany and the Baltic states, employs more than 450 people, manages over 4 500 hectares of peatland, and serves customers in more than 60 countries. Since its 2023 combination with Group DC, HAWITA has continued to run as an independent sub-group, supplying the entire “green industry” value chain from hobby gardeners to commercial nurseries.

Company History

The group’s roots reach back to the 1920s. In 1926 the Haskamp family founded the Torfwerk B. Haskamp & Co. in Lohne, and the same year the Tabeling family registered Erden- & Substratwerk Tabeling in Vechta — the two family lines that would later merge. A third peat and substrate works was established in Lauterbach in 1949, and in 1973 the families jointly acquired the Drebber peat works. HAWITA Gruppe GmbH was officially registered in 1991. The portfolio then expanded into plastic containers (technoplant, founded 1993 in Emstek), fleece propagation plugs (Helmut Schneider GmbH, founded 1996 in Künzelsau), and Baltic production through HAWITA Baltic in Latvia from 2000 onward. After the passing of founding family member Hans Tabeling in 2012, the current managing director took over the lead, and in 2023 the group completed its combination with Group DC.

Three Product Lines

HAWITA’s portfolio rests on three pillars. The “Erden & Substrate” line covers both professional substrates for commercial horticulture and consumer brands such as Fruhstorfer Erde, HAWITA Flor®, Premium Erde and Ahrens Erde, available in numerous blends for flowering, foliage, orchid and herb growing, plus peat-free and peat-reduced variants. The “technoplant” line, produced at the Emstek site, offers hanging baskets, balcony planters, cultivation pots, decorative containers and the Balconera self-watering series, with Euro-pallet display solutions for retail. The “Easypot” line, made at Künzelsau, supplies around 500 million fleece propagation plugs per year in 2 to 7 cm sizes to European nurseries, with used trays recovered, washed and reused through the group’s multi-trip returnable system.

Sustainability

HAWITA positions itself as a sustainability-led family supplier. The group runs PCR (post-consumer recycled) plastics and in-house composting programmes to cut virgin plastic and peat use, and is a member of the VEA “climate-friendly SMEs” initiative. On former peat workings in Germany and Latvia, the group carries out renaturation well beyond statutory requirements, restoring cut-away bogs into water-retentive wetlands. After joining Group DC in 2023, HAWITA links sustainability KPIs to each production site’s performance, with the programme featured in regional business media such as the Argumente magazine.
