Historical Evolution

IMAU is the earliest undergraduate higher-education institution established in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It was founded in 1999 through the merger of the former Inner Mongolia Agricultural and Animal Husbandry College and the former Inner Mongolia Forestry College. Its roots go back to 1952, when the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department of Hebei Agricultural College, the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department of Pingyuan Agricultural College and the Veterinary Specialty of Shanxi Agricultural College migrated in their entirety to Hohhot to form the Inner Mongolia Animal Husbandry and Veterinary College, the autonomous region’s first full-time undergraduate institution. The Inner Mongolia Forestry College was established in 1958 as the first forestry institution of higher learning in a minority-region area of New China, and in 1999 the two colleges merged to form today’s IMAU. IMAU was approved in 2001 as a key university supported by the national Western Development Strategy, became a co-built university of the autonomous region government and the National Forestry and Grassland Administration in 2012, and joined the national Higher Education Revitalisation Plan for Central and Western China in 2013. The university is recognised as a national greening model unit and is widely known as a “garden-style institution of higher learning” beyond the Great Wall.

Disciplines and Key Research Platforms

IMAU is a multidisciplinary university with agriculture at its core and grassland livestock farming as its defining strength, spanning eight disciplines including agriculture, engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law and the arts.
