Founding History

The Japan Shohin Bonsai Growers Cooperative traces its roots to 1975 (Showa 50). Its predecessor, the West Japan Shohin Bonsai Society, was founded in March of that year and reorganized into a nationwide body in September. For decades it operated as an unincorporated association, organizing major exhibitions such as the Gafu-ten and promoting the popularity of shohin bonsai across Japan. On 4 November 2022 (Reiwa 4), responding to shrinking domestic demand, expanding overseas interest, and succession challenges among small and mid-sized bonsai businesses, the body was officially restructured into a legally incorporated cooperative under its current name, formalizing its financial base and collective economic activities for member enterprises.

Governance and Board Structure

The cooperative is led by Representative Director (Chair) Miura Yuki (Miura Baikeien), with Vice-Chair Tokuo Takashi (President, Kindai Shuppan) and Managing Director Nishimura Masashi (Kanshin Hamono Seisakusho). The board divides responsibilities across specialized portfolios including planning and public relations, exhibitions (Gafu-ten, Sakufu-ten, Risshun Ooichi, Shohin Bonsai Festa), and exchange meetings (auctions and headquarters congress). Auditor Sasaki Masahiro (Yugen-kaisha Gashoen, President) provides independent oversight. The Secretariat is hosted within the Ueno Green Club in Taito Ward, Tokyo, operating under a three-tier member-assembly / board / secretariat governance model.

Nationwide Members and Regional Network

The cooperative’s membership is composed of specialty shohin bonsai retailers from across Japan, organized into seven regional blocks: Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Hokuriku, Kansai, Chugoku, and Kyushu. Members participate in regional exhibitions (Spring Gafu, Autumn Gafu, Kyushu Gafu, Hokuriku Gafu, Tokai Gafuten) where they conduct direct sales and engage in peer exchange. Beyond sales channel support, the cooperative provides joint procurement, technical guidance, and coordinated promotion, building a national retail and service network dedicated to shohin bonsai enthusiasts throughout Japan.

Gafu-ten and Exhibition Programs

The flagship event is the annual Gafu-ten (Shohin-Bonsai Gafu-ten) held every January at Miyakomesse in Kyoto, which reached its 51st edition in 2026 and is widely regarded as Japan’s premier shohin bonsai festival. Selected specialty dealers from across the country gather to display and sell rare pieces unavailable elsewhere. Around this flagship, the cooperative runs a year-round exhibition portfolio including Spring Gafu, Autumn Gafu, Kyushu Gafu, Hokuriku Gafu, and Tokai Gafuten, as well as events such as the Spring Bonsai Festa with Shohin Bonsai Fair and Suiseki-ten held in April 2026 at the Ueno Green Club in Tokyo.

Operational Strategy and Industry Contribution

Guided by the principle of mutual aid, the cooperative supports its members through diverse activities including Super Auctions, Sakufu-ten (professional artist exhibitions), and the Risshun Ooichi market, enabling product circulation and joint brand development across the membership. To address structural challenges facing the industry — an aging domestic enthusiast base, growing overseas demand, and shortages of skilled artisans and successor managers — the cooperative invests in overseas-facing exhibition channels, technical training programs, and member-store communications. Through its incorporation as a legal cooperative, the organization has strengthened its credit standing and expanded the scope of joint economic activity, supporting the long-term sustainability of Japan’s shohin bonsai industry.
