历史与园区

History and Site

Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens sits on 12 acres inside South Park in Buffalo, New York. The conservatory was designed by Lord & Burnham, modeled after rare glasshouses built in 19th-century London, and opened in 1900. The surrounding park was laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted in the 1800s. The campus is owned by Erie County and operated by a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. In 2017 the grounds were designated a Level II Arboretum through ArbNet, with more than 100 trees, several dating back over 125 years to the original Olmsted plantings. Today the gardens welcome about 140,000 visitors each year.

Conservatory and Plant Collections

The indoor display is organized around a single glass landmark, the 67-foot Palm Dome, with 3,000+ panes of glass. The conservatory is divided into themed sections that highlight different climate zones: a Koi Pond that introduces the freshwater ecosystem, a Rainforest with tropical and subtropical plants, a Desert featuring cacti, euphorbia and agave, and a Bonsai collection of tropical and coniferous specimens. Outside, 12 acres of outdoor gardens include the arboretum, Welcome Garden, Event and Visitor Courtyard, Discovery Garden, Farm Garden, and Wegmans Family Garden, with seasonal plantings that change through the year.

Education and Community Programs

The organization runs year-round classes and workshops covering printmaking, plant care, watercolor, terrarium building, and family nature activities; a Children’s Garden and outdoor Playspace operate during the warmer months. Long-term partners include Erie County, the New York State Department of Environment and Planning, the City of Buffalo, Buffalo public and charter schools, Olmsted Parks Conservancy, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County, and several local societies such as the WNY Herb Study Group and Niagara Frontier Orchid Society. Together they support school field trips, public lectures, and shared horticultural programming across Western New York.

Governance and Funding

Operations are managed by the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens Society, a 501(c)(3) supported by public funds from Erie County and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, together with membership dues, individual donors, business sponsors, and admissions. A professional staff, a Board of Directors, and more than 250 active volunteers guide horticulture, education, and marketing. A 2011 strategic plan positioned the gardens as the horticultural hub of Western New York. In 2024 the Society launched an expansion and renovation project with Erie County, Wendel Companies, and Turner Construction to modernize visitor amenities while preserving the historic conservatory.

Visitor Information and Signature Programs

The gardens are open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The campus sits inside South Park in Erie County and is reached via Exit 55 (Route 219 / Ridge Road) or Route 5 South (Tifft Street); parking is free along the South Park Ring Road or in the on-site lot. Signature programs include Inspiration Stations, Scarecrow Trail, Poinsettia Sale, the Wegmans Family Garden, and Farm Garden.
