The Arbor Day Foundation, headquartered at Lincoln, Nebraska, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization founded in 1972 by John Rosenow on the centennial of the first Arbor Day. With more than 1 million members, the Foundation has planted over 500 million trees in partnership with 5,400+ local organizations across 60+ countries, and reports annual revenue of approximately $84 million. CEO Dan Lambe leads an organization whose mission is to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees, connecting science-based site selection with local expertise to place trees where they can do the most good for climate, communities, and biodiversity.
History and Governance
The Foundation traces its origin to the first Arbor Day proclaimed in Nebraska in 1872. John Rosenow founded the modern Foundation in 1972 to convert that civic tradition into a national conservation movement. The Foundation is incorporated in Nebraska with its headquarters in Lincoln, and also operates the 260-acre Lied Lodge & Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska City. The current chief executive is Dan Lambe, with Leslie Weldon serving as Board Chair; under their leadership the Foundation has grown into a global network spanning 60+ countries with annual revenue near $84 million.
Publications and Public Education
The Foundation publishes planting guides, urban-forestry case studies and conservation explainers on arborday.org, and maintains the Perspectives blog covering climate, forestry and city planning topics. Members receive curated tree recommendations, planting advice and member-only events, and the Foundation produces educational materials on tree shade, energy savings, biodiversity and storm-water management in partnership with schools, hospitals and municipal agencies.
Programs and Resources
The Foundation operates two parallel program tracks. The community track is anchored by Tree City USA, which now reaches 95% of U.S. neighborhoods, and extends to Tree Campus Higher Education, Tree Campus K-12, Tree Campus Healthcare, Tree Line USA, the Alliance for Community Trees and Community Tree Distributions, giving cities, universities, schools, hospitals and utilities a shared framework for tree care. The forest track runs Replanting Our National Forests, Rain Forest Rescue, Natural Disaster Recovery and global carbon reforestation projects that have replanted more than 108 million trees lost to fire, insects, disease and weather since 1972, using GIS mapping and long-term local partnerships.
Community, Awards, and Member Engagement
The Foundation hosts the national Arbor Day celebration each year, alongside Tree City USA recognition events, Alliance for Community Trees gatherings and Corporate Partnership forums. It recognizes high-performing communities through the Tree City USA Growth Award and provides seed funding for student programs, storm-water management and community canopy work. Members and volunteers can order locally adapted tree seedlings through the website, run Community Tree Distributions and support Nature Explore programming for children’s outdoor education.
