History and Site Development

The original Botanic Garden was founded by the University of St Andrews in 1889 within the precincts of St Mary’s College, laid out initially along the Bentham and Hooker classification system and used chiefly for teaching. In the early 1960s the collection outgrew the town-centre site and a new 7.5-hectare (18.5-acre) garden was laid out from two fields to provide more varied soils and microclimates. The garden was leased to Fife Council in 1987, and in 2014 St Andrews Botanic Garden Trust took over full responsibility from the former Education Trust, with continued support from Fife Council and the University of St Andrews.

Collections and Notable Plant Groups

About eight thousand plant species representing the world’s major biomes are grown here, giving the collection national-significance status in the UK. The rock garden and alpine house are widely regarded as a highlight, with strong holdings in Sorbus, Rhododendron and Berberis. Records are kept in the IrisBG database, and the garden is an active member of Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI).

Chinese and Chilean Specialist Plantings

The China Border holds the bulk of the woody material brought back from the 1981 Sino-British expedition, which was led by the then Honorary Curator together with botanists from the Kunming Institute of Botany at the Chinese Academy of Sciences; new wild-collected accessions continue to be added, alongside herbaceous perennials and bulbs. Chilean woody plants form the other signature planting, now being supplemented with herbaceous species and bulbs from the same region.

Teaching, Research and Public Programmes

The garden continues to support teaching at the University of St Andrews and neighbouring schools, while running long-term biodiversity monitoring on-site that feeds into research on how plants respond to a changing climate. Public programmes range from Little Oaks toddler groups and Garden Explorers kids’ clubs to Pilates in the Botanics, Nordic walking sessions, monthly walks with the garden team, lunchtime lectures, holiday clubs and regular volunteer gardening days.

Visitor Information and Operations

The garden sits in Fife on the edge of St Andrews, around a ten-minute walk from the town bus station. It is run by the charity St Andrews Botanic Garden Trust, registered in Scotland as SC036705. Opening hours are split between summer (April–September) and winter (October–March), with a short closure over Christmas. Admission is tiered (adult / concession / free for under-16s and carers), and the visitor centre provides level access, a wheelchair for hire and an accessible toilet.
