Tree Shop

About Tree Shop

Tree Shop is a UK online supplier of quality trees and shrubs, trading as Tree Shop Ltd and owned by John Davis, who has chaired and managed the predecessor company Woodland Improvement and Conservation Ltd since 1986. That business was established in 1937 and became one of the longest established silvicultural nurseries in the country. The website opened in 2001 under the Woodland company and moved to Tree Shop Ltd in July 2010 as part of a restructuring, so the tree-growing trade behind it is close to ninety years old and the online side more than twenty.

What They Sell

Stock is organised into nine categories: 85 pot grown trees, 81 arboretum species, 41 native trees, 29 evergreen, 22 hedging plants, 18 shrubs, 17 fruit trees and 19 cell grown trees, plus tree guards and firewood. Trees come in three forms — pot grown, cell grown in root trainers, and field grown trees lifted at size, the last being the cheapest per plant and the usual choice for shelter planting. Best sellers point at the nursery’s emphasis on native species: blackthorn, common alder, green beech, hawthorn, rowan, silver birch, small-leaved lime, sweet chestnut and horse chestnut, with hedging sold by the plant at a few pounds each. Accessories include bamboo canes, spiral guards, EASYWRAP tree shelters and stakes.

Choosing by Situation

Rather than sorting only by botanical group, the shop filters by the conditions a plant has to cope with: small garden trees, shade tolerant, fast growing, autumn colour, improves air quality, chalk and alkaline soil, dry and sandy conditions, poor and acid soils, wet areas, exposed conditions, urban trees, wildlife friendly, and hedgerows and shelterbelts. For anyone who does not know the Latin names, that framing is easier to shop from.

Delivery

Delivery is charged in bands, excluding VAT: £15.75 up to £75 of order, £23.10 from £76 to £200, £31.50 from £201 to £300, £42 from £301 to £500, £47.25 from £501 to £1000 and £52.50 above £1000. Small orders of 15 or fewer 40/60 cell-grown trees can go by Royal Mail within the UK mainland for as little as £8.90, provided the order is flagged in the comments box for postal delivery. Scotland’s Grampian and Highland areas carry an extra charge set by the courier. Guernsey, Jersey, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight and both Irish regions can be served, but the cost has to be arranged with the courier in advance.

Free Guides and Aftercare

A set of free PDF guides covers the bigger picture rather than plant care: creating a woodland, taking thinnings from farm woodland, selling sawlogs, firewood production, coppice with standards, and building a shelterbelt, including one drawing on an article on Optimal Shelterbelts from the Quarterly Journal of Forestry. For anyone tendering for woodland planting these are more use than the product pages. The shop also points to its team for advice on planting and aftercare, and has published terms for exchanges, returns and complaints.
