About the Garden

The Seattle Chinese Garden sits on a plateau at the north end of South Seattle College, spanning 4.6 acres with sweeping views of downtown Seattle, Elliott Bay, and the Cascade Mountains. As one of the largest Chinese gardens outside of China, it showcases the four traditional elements of classical Chinese garden design: plants, stone, architecture, and water. Admission is free.

Garden Highlights

Designed in the Sichuan style, the garden features pavilions, bamboo groves, and themed courtyards including the Song Mei Pavilion, Chan Education Center, Knowing the Spring Courtyard, Chongqing Entry Gatehouse, and the Luoyang Peony Garden. Plants include pine, cypress, and peonies, with landscapes that transform dramatically through each season.

Sister City Partnership

In 1983, Seattle and Chongqing became sister cities, agreeing in their first pact to create a Sichuan-style Chinese garden in Seattle. The Seattle Chinese Garden Society was established in 1989 to lead the effort. Ground broke in 1999, and over the years the garden has completed key landmarks reflecting the friendship between the two cities. Washington State and Sichuan Province are also sister jurisdictions.

Public Programs

The garden hosts annual cultural events including the Peony Festival, Lantern Festival, World Taichi Gong Day, and the Bamboo Circle Celebration. Visitors can also participate in Chinese knot-tying, calligraphy, tea ceremonies, and other hands-on cultural activities throughout the year, making it a vibrant community hub for Chinese arts and culture.
