RNGR(Reforestation, Nurseries, and Genetic Resources,再造林、苗圃和遗传资源计划)由美国农业部林务局(USDA Forest Service)下辖的州、私营与部落林业副署(State, Private, and Tribal Forestry deputy area)主持建设,定位是该副署面向公众发布林业育苗技术资料的核心门户。

About the RNGR Plan

RNGR (Reforestation, Nurseries, and Genetic Resources) is a technology-information portal built and maintained by the State, Private, and Tribal Forestry deputy area of the USDA Forest Service. The About page of the source site states that the Forest Service is widely recognized as a leader in the science of natural resource management, and that one of the missions of the deputy area is to develop and disseminate technical information in partnership with cooperating organizations; RNGR is the public face of that work, aimed at people who grow forest and conservation seedlings, the organizations and agencies that support them, and individuals who want to learn more about nursery production, tree improvement, seed handling and native plant restoration.

Article Database and Serial Publications

The Publications page of the source site describes RNGR.net as a searchable database of over 11,000 technical articles, the great majority available for download in PDF and continuously updated. Its longest-running serial is Tree Planters’ Notes, founded in 1950 as a technology-transfer venue for nursery production and outplanting of trees, shrubs and native plants used in reforestation, conservation and restoration. From 1993 the team also produced a companion abstract-and-newsletter, Forest Nursery Notes, which ran through 2015. In addition, RNGR hosts the National Nursery Proceedings, the conference paper series of the U.S. and Canadian forest and conservation nursery associations, whose earliest entries go back to 1949 and which still receives new proceedings every year.

Three Manuals at the Core

Three reference manuals sit at the centre of the site’s downloads. The Container Tree Nursery Manual is a multi-volume guide to producing tree and woody-shrub seedlings in containers, covering site layout, media, irrigation, fertilization, pest management and seedling quality grading. The Tropical Nursery Manual is written specifically for nurseries of native and traditional plants in tropical climates and walks the reader through site selection, propagation, fertilization, handling and shipping. The Woody Plant Seed Manual covers seed biology, collection, processing, storage, testing and nursery practice for a wide range of forest and conservation species. All three are organized by chapter and offered as free downloads from the source site.

National Seed Lab, Directory and Native Plant Network

Alongside the publications, RNGR hosts three further public resources. The National Seed Laboratory is operated by the USDA Forest Service as a national facility providing seed testing, storage research and genetic-identity services to forest and conservation nurseries; the lab was established in 1954 and remains the only federally run forest-seed laboratory in North America. The National Nursery and Seed Directory is an online directory of businesses in the United States and Canada that support the propagation of forest and native plant materials, searchable by state, product or business type. The Native Plant Network provides technical and practical information on growing and outplanting North American native plants (Canada, the United States and Mexico) for restoration, conservation, reforestation and landscaping work.
