(Bloedel Conservatory)、Milner Gardens & Woodland、UBC Botanical Garden、The Gardens at HCP、Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden、Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park、Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden、Minter Country Garden、Nitobe Memorial Garden
Founding History and Coalition Background
Explore Gardens British Columbia, also known as Gardens BC, is officially registered as the British Columbia Garden Tourism Coalition Society, a not-for-profit society based in British Columbia, Canada. The coalition was founded by Dave Cowen of The Butchart Gardens together with a group of gardeners and marketers across the province, bringing independent public gardens under a single industry body to jointly promote BC garden tourism and diverse garden experiences.
Mission and Tourism Marketing Strategy
The coalition describes itself as a coalition of public gardens working together to promote visiting and experiencing the diversity of British Columbia’s gardens and garden experiences. Its membership mix reflects the breadth of the provincial garden experience, spanning export-ready public gardens and local community gardens alike. Through collaboration with inbound travel companies and targeted messaging, Gardens BC markets BC as a unified garden destination.
Regional Gardens and Destination Categories
Geographically, the coalition divides the province into four destination regions: Vancouver Island (home to Victoria and historic garden communities), Metro Vancouver (urban garden clusters), the Fraser Valley (Langley, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Harrison River Valley), and Northern British Columbia (anchored by Prince George). Each region has a dedicated destination page and curated itineraries connecting coastal rainforests, fertile valleys, and interior mountains.
Garden Events and Seasonal Experiences
The coalition’s garden directory lists member gardens across the province, including The Butchart Gardens, Bloedel Conservatory, Milner Gardens & Woodland, UBC Botanical Garden, The Gardens at HCP, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park, Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden, Minter Country Garden, Nitobe Memorial Garden, and many more. The directory spans botanical gardens, cultural gardens, National Historic Sites, arboreta, garden centres, butterfly gardens, and tropical sanctuaries.
Academic Partnerships and Industry Research
Gardens BC maintains a long-standing research partnership with Royal Roads University. Dr. Brian White and Khanh Le have published the academic paper The Resilience of BC Gardens together with a companion video, examining how public gardens in southern British Columbia adapted to COVID-19 closures, extreme heat, drought, flooding, and shifting visitor economies. The initiative positions Gardens BC as both a marketing platform and a publisher of applied industry research.
