From Jawczyce to Pruszków
Źródło Dobrych Pnączy means the source of good climbers. The nursery started in 1988 in Jawczyce near Warsaw and moved the whole operation to Pruszków in 1996, where it has stayed ever since. A second production site at Pogroszewo-Kolonia was added in 2022. Nursery and branch together now cover more than twenty hectares, all of it under container cultivation. Earlier English pages still quote ten hectares with seven and a half under cover, which was the picture before the branch existed.
Output and wholesale supply
The nursery sells wholesale only, supplying other nurseries, wholesalers, garden centres and stores. There is no retail counter and nothing is shipped to private customers. Roughly 2.5 million plants leave the site in a year, going to thirty-six countries across five continents.
The base container is the two-litre C2, with larger C5, C7.5 and C11 pots for selected species and cultivars. A two-litre plant runs a three-year production cycle, using certified substrates and standardised watering, so plants leave well rooted and evenly branched.
Clematis collection and own breeding
Clematis is the main line. The collection holds more than a thousand species and cultivars, and over 290 are grown for sale, covering large-flowered, small-flowered and non-climbing herbaceous types in a wide range of colours and forms. Besides clematis the nursery produces more than 80 other garden climbers suited to Polish conditions, among them Actinidia, Lonicera and Wisteria.
The breeding programme is run by Dr Szczepan Marczyński and started in 1992. A new cultivar takes eight to fifteen years from pollination to market. Thousands of seedlings are watched over that time, more than 70% of them are dropped, and roughly five hundred remaining seedlings yield a single cultivar. The first three, Barbara, Hania and Julka, reached the market in the summer of 2001. By 2015 Marczyński had raised thirty-six clematis cultivars and nine cultivars of other climbers; the collection under his programme now holds about ninety-six varieties, and the nursery still adds new ones each year. The nursery also holds exclusive European rights to three cultivars raised by other breeders, whose recent introductions include Blue Ice Cream, Brides Bouquet and Just Lucky in the early large-flowered group.
Awards and trade fairs
At IPM in Essen in 2019 the nursery took the gold statuette in the finished plants and trees category of the AIPH International Grower of the Year competition, and silver in the young plants category. The nine finalists that year included growers from Belgium, China, Denmark, the Netherlands and Kenya. AIPH said of the gold that the company had made clematis its field of expertise and counts among the most innovative clematis and climber producers in the world.
Other honours for its own cultivars: Maria Skłodowska Curie came second in the Royal Horticultural Society People’s Choice Awards in 2019, the 2017 plant catalogue won a Green Laurel at Green is Life, and Polish clematis cultivars have appeared on Polish Post stamps. The nursery shows up regularly at IPM, Flowers Expo in Moscow and Salon du Végétal in France.
Encyclopaedia, catalogue and brands
The site carries an encyclopaedia of climbers, with entries arranged by group and hardiness rating, each one illustrated and annotated with growing notes and a zone rating. The plant catalogue is reissued every year, the current edition covering 2026-2027, and it gives pictogram-style advice rather than bare specifications. Separate chapters cover a list for beginners, pruning from late February to early April, diseases and frost hardiness; container-grown plants can be set out from April to mid-November.
Production has also been split across three sister brands. More Than Flowers covers perennials and flowering shrubs such as hydrangeas, lilacs, magnolias, spiraeas and daylilies. More Than Leaves is foliage and ornamental grasses, including hollies, hostas, heucheras and a selection of sedges and tiarellas. More Than Fruits covers berry and fruit plants that are ornamental and edible at once, such as aronia, blackberry, blueberry and sea buckthorn. Each brand has its own site, while the original CLEMATIS name still covers the climbers. The nursery is a member of Fleuroselect, the international organisation for the ornamental plants industry.
