Founding and site

Tuingoed Foltz sits on roughly four hectares of pasture between the villages of Meeden and Westerlee in the eastern Groningen province of the Netherlands, bordered on three sides by canals and ditches. In the summer of 1999, Bob Foltz and Andries Bierling found the Mastenbroek farmstead — exactly one hundred years old — and after encouraging talks with the local municipality, they began shaping their nursery and display gardens on this fertile ground. The first tree, a multi-stem Catalpa, was planted in the centre of the mother beds in February 2000; the new nursery opened a month later. Plants are grown without chemical pesticides, and visitors are welcome to bring leashed dogs.

National collections and specialisations

The nursery holds the Dutch National Plant Collections (NPC) for Salvia and Echinacea. Beyond those two genera, the catalogue runs deep in Epimedium, unusual woodland plants, ferns, prairie plants, ornamental grasses, jungle plants, Clematis, annuals and, in autumn, fruit trees. The collection covers about three thousand species, making it one of the largest and most varied specialist nurseries in the Netherlands.

The nursery and display gardens

Half the grounds are working nursery and gardens; the rest is a landscape park. The mother beds (moerbedden) form the heart of both — most of the plants are grown on here to maturity, and a large share of the stock is propagated from the same beds by cuttings, division or seed. Beyond the mother beds lie the Echinacea and prairie garden, the Salvia and ornamental grass garden, a circular private garden around the old farmhouse, Bob’s shade garden (extended in 2014), and the “achterland” — a hazel walk, a grass labyrinth, a frog pond and a nature meadow reached through a linden avenue.

Shop, design and brocante

The old stable has been turned into a garden shop and brocante boutique. The forged tools of the Dutch brand De Wit are the centrepiece — some models, including the taproot lifter and a forged garden rake, were developed with the nursery’s input and carry a lifetime guarantee on the forging. The shelves also carry Felco pruners, Opinel knives, OXXA and SHOWA gloves, Van Hemert seeds and Ecostyle organic fertilisers. Three times a year, roughly, the team travels to France, Belgium or England for brocante. The nursery also designs, builds and maintains gardens, with prairie plantings — grasses with Echinacea, Helenium, Agastache and Eryngium — as the current signature style.

Group visits and annual events

Open from March to mid-November, Wednesday through Saturday plus the first and third Sundays of the month. The calendar runs with themed weekends: the Alternative Nursery Days, the Rare Plant Days, the Great Exotics Market and, in autumn, the Fruit and Pruning Days, where old apple, pear and plum varieties can be identified at the Noordelijke Pomologische Vereniging stand and pruning demonstrations are held in the old orchard. Two group arrangements (coffee and self-guided walk; coffee and guided tour) are available by reservation. In 2026, on the nursery’s twenty-fifth anniversary, Bob Foltz and Andries Bierling received the second Rob Leopold Penning for their role in connecting northern Dutch garden culture.
