Laumas Nature Park (Laumu dabas parks) sits in the Kurzeme coastal area of western Latvia and works as a combined plant collection, nature-education site and leisure destination. The park is operated by SIA Laumas, and the name comes from the Lauma — a forest sprite in Latvian folklore — which is why the park’s logo is the white female figure with outstretched arms. The site sits in a patch of Kurzeme coastal woodland whose underlying vegetation is a mix of evergreen conifer stands, mixed forest and small ponds.

Four Themed Trails

The park’s main offering is a set of four themed nature trails. The Bee Trail (Bišu taka) is run by a local beekeeper who walks visitors in protective suits through a live colony, explaining the social roles inside the hive, the different castes of bee on record, and a few of the world records bees hold. The Bird Trail (Putnu taka) leans on a large wooden dinosaur sculpture nicknamed Albert to walk visitors through bird evolution, the structure of feathers and wings, the variety of nests and eggs, and many other quirks of bird life. The Forest Trail (Meža taka) is a roughly 2.3 km loop through mixed woodland — passing a beaver dam, a hazel stand and a forest meadow where roe deer, elk, wild boar and black storks are regularly seen. The Plant Trail (Augu taka) is the horticultural heart of the park, planted with forty-plus yews (Īve) of various cultivars, junipers and cypresses, and a couple of ponds with water lilies.

Plant Collection and Seasonal Interest

The Plant Trail is what makes Laumas a genuine arboretum: its main remit is collecting evergreen and winter-interest plants that will hold up in the Latvian coastal climate — multiple yew cultivars, junipers and cypresses, a small selection of water-lily varieties for the ponds, plus an understorey of flowering shrubs, herbs and ornamental grasses. The park staff emphasise that there is something to see in every season — buds and early blossom in spring, foliage and flowers in summer, foliage colour and berries in autumn, and the evergreens still standing out in snow through the winter. The Bee Trail and Bird Trail work more like small open-air museums, bringing the biodiversity of a temperate European forest onto a site that families and school groups can reach in a day.

Beyond the trails, the park runs a fairly complete leisure estate: a guesthouse (Viesu nams), rentable campsites and tent pitches, a holiday cottage with its own sauna (Brīvdienu māja ar pirti), a separate Laumiņa sauna, a small farm-style kitchen called Laumu ķēķis, and dedicated picnic spots. There is a sports trail and a disc-golf course, and the park regularly hosts weddings, anniversaries, corporate training days, summer camps and school groups. The whole site is open year-round and is one of the most popular family-and-school nature destinations in the Kurzeme coast area.

Year-Round Visiting

The park’s experience shifts sharply with the seasons: summer is when the trails and bee demonstrations are busiest, autumn brings berries and coloured foliage, and winter turns the trails into a snow route paired with saunas and hot meals under the “Ziema Laumās” programme. Its position on the Kurzeme coast makes it a natural stop on any drive between Riga and Ventspils, and a useful family station on a wider Baltic coastal itinerary.
