World Bonsai Friendship Federation

1. 非洲(Africa)
2. 亚太地区(Asia/Pacific,不含中国、印度、日本)
(Australia/New Zealand)
(China, including Taiwan)
(Europe)
6. 印度(India)
7. 日本(Japan)
(Latin America, including Mexico and the Caribbean)
(North America, Canada/U.S.A.)

(Omiya, Japan)

About the Organization

The World Bonsai Friendship Federation (WBFF) is an international, non-profit federation that connects national bonsai societies worldwide. Its stated aims are to promote bonsai as a living art form accessible to all peoples, to encourage the cross-border exchange of bonsai knowledge, technique and materials, and to sponsor the World Bonsai Convention once every four years. Since 2010, WBFF also coordinates the worldwide World Bonsai Day celebrated on the second Saturday of May, in tribute to its co-founder Saburo Kato.

Founding and Background

WBFF traces its origins to Expo ’70 in Osaka, Japan. The four co-founders—Saburo Kato, Haruo Kaneshiro, John Naka and Ted Tsukiyama—used the world exposition as a catalyst to formalize the Japanese bonsai community’s call for “World Peace through Bonsai.” The Federation was officially established in 1989 in Omiya, Japan, alongside the very first World Bonsai Convention. Kato was appointed Honorary Chairman, and WBFF has run on a voluntary, non-profit basis ever since.

Nine Regional Chapters

Under WBFF’s Bylaws, the world is organised into nine regions, each represented on the WBFF Board by a regional federation. The regions are: Africa; Asia/Pacific (excluding China, India and Japan); Australia/New Zealand; China (including Taiwan); Europe; India; Japan; Latin America (including Mexico and the Caribbean); and North America (Canada and the United States). In 2007 the Bylaws were amended to move Mexico and the Caribbean out of North America and into Latin America, and the South Asia branch was later carved out of Asia/Pacific to cover India and neighbouring countries.

World Bonsai Convention (WBC) History

The World Bonsai Convention is held every four years. Past editions: Omiya, Japan (1989); Orlando, Florida (1993); Seoul, Korea (1997); Munich, Germany (2001); Washington, D.C. (2005); San Juan, Puerto Rico (2009); Jin Tan, China (2013); Saitama, Japan (2017); Perth, Australia (2022, postponed from 2021). The 10th WBC will be held 28–31 August 2026 at Pavilion Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, combining bonsai, suiseki and wood art exhibitions with cultural and educational programmes.

Current Operations

WBFF’s day-to-day operations and website are supported by volunteer staff, with correspondence handled through its public web channels. The Federation regularly previews upcoming events such as regional workshops, World Bonsai Day affiliates, and the 10th WBC warm-up programmes. Membership enquiries are routed through the regional federations that sit on the WBFF Board.
