Identity and Family Heritage

Tsugawa Nursery was founded by Mable Tsugawa in March 1981 in Woodland, Washington, and has continued as a family-run operation for more than four decades. Mable began the nursery with no prior horticultural experience, but her resolve, willingness to learn, and never-give-up attitude became the foundation of a 40-year success story that continues to inspire the local community. Her husband George Tsugawa and their son Brian Tsugawa remain central to the operation, with Brian leading the nursery’s Bonsai programme.

The nursery’s milestone history has been documented by regional press. On 24 February 1982, Richard Spiro of the Longview Daily News interviewed Mable for the first-anniversary feature. On 20 March 2011, Cheryll A. Borgaard of the Longview Daily News wrote a 30-year retrospective. On 15 June 2011, Cathy Zimmerman of the same newspaper profiled the annual Strawberry Social. In March 2021, the regional horticultural programme Garden Time devoted its monthly magazine to a tribute honouring Mable’s legacy on the nursery’s 40th anniversary.

Retail Catalogue and Specialty Plants

The nursery’s main retail navigation is organised into four pillars: In Our Nursery, Bonsai, Pond & Garden Supplies, and Garden & Landscape Services. Annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, and both bare-root and potted fruit & nut trees are stocked year-round. Bare-root lists are refreshed each February, while potted fruit-tree lists are refreshed each January; both lists are curated to Semi-Dwarf Rootstock across Apple, Cherry, Peach, Pear, and Plum varieties.

The Bonsai department is a signature specialisation, taught and curated by Brian Tsugawa. Other named collections within the nursery include Camellias, Wisteria, Hydrangeas, Lilacs, Lavender, Flowering Cherries, Dogwoods, Bamboo, and a dedicated Native Plants section. Landscape Services and Water Gardens

The Garden & Landscape Services branch provides consultation and design services for Water Gardens, Perennial Gardens, Drought-Tolerant Gardens, Native Plant Landscapes, Edible Landscapes, Oriental Gardens, and Low-Maintenance Landscapes. The team works with clients from initial concept through to planting plans and after-care guidance.

The Pond & Garden Supplies branch complements the design services with a full retail selection of aquatic plants, pond hardware, and seasonal containers. The nursery publishes its own Pond Algae Control article to advise customers on water-quality management, and a separate Fall Containers piece to guide seasonal potted displays. The nursery is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for in-store shopping and advisory walk-ins.

Education Programme and Community Outreach

The nursery runs a year-round calendar of free and low-cost horticulture classes. Recurring offerings include Bonsai Introductory Class, Bonsai Continuing Class, Pruning Japanese Maples with Brian Tsugawa, Attracting Pollinators to Your Garden with Dana Rea, Intro to Natives with Sherrie, and Rose Care & Pruning co-hosted with the Fort Vancouver Rose Society. New classes are released each February, March, and April; most sessions are free of charge, with only the more advanced Bonsai Continuing Class carrying a modest fee paid in-store on the day of attendance.

The nursery is also a major contributor to regional community life, supporting more than 25 local organisations. Featured partners include CASA, Habitat for Humanity, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, Clark County Skills Foundation, Lower Columbia School Gardens, Lelooska Foundation, Shriners Children’s Programs, Relay for Life, Vancouver Wildlife Foundation, and many elementary and high-school programmes across Cowlitz County. Academic Partnerships and Horticultural Articles

Tsugawa Nursery maintains an ongoing variety-trial relationship with Washington State University (WSU). In its bareroot fruit-tree catalogue, the nursery explicitly marks recommended WSU varieties such as Gravenstein Apple (an early-season cooking apple with red stripes and yellow skin) and Honeycrisp Apple (a crisp, sweet-tart dessert apple rated as a great keeper). These WSU recommended varieties anchor the nursery’s retail fruit-tree programme.

Other academic and trade partnerships include the Fort Vancouver Rose Society for joint rose-pruning classes, Native Grounds Nursery for native-bird habitat workshops, and the regional Master Gardeners programme for volunteer-led Bonsai and Mason Bee sessions.
