Mission and History
Garden State Gardens is a 501(c)(3) non-profit consortium founded in 2009, bringing together more than 30 of New Jersey’s public gardens with horticultural, educational, artistic, and historic value. Its mission is to raise public awareness and appreciation of these gardens through the collaboration of allied public-garden professionals.
Member Network and Geography
Member gardens are organized into three regional groups — North Jersey, Central Jersey, and South Jersey — and include botanical gardens, arboreta, historic estates, urban community gardens, and nature preserves, such as Skylands (New Jersey Botanical Garden), Frelinghuysen Arboretum, Rutgers Gardens, Colonial Park Gardens, Grounds For Sculpture, Reeves-Reed Arboretum, Greenwood Gardens, Leonard J. Buck Garden, and Morven Museum and Garden.
Membership and Collaboration
The consortium runs on a tiered annual dues structure based on each member garden’s budget, ranging from 50 to 350 USD. Eligibility requires a horticulture-centered mission, labeled or curated plant collections, non-profit status, and regular public access. Members benefit from joint marketing, group purchasing, shared large-scale event participation, and collaborative promotion.
Passport Program and Public Engagement
Its signature outreach program is the Garden State Gardens Passport, which invites visitors to check in at member gardens and complete the requirements for a limited-edition 12x16x4 inch zippered tote bag. A printable web version with QR code is also available, with the 2024 edition rolled out across member sites to drive cross-garden visitation.
Speakers Bureau and Outreach
The Speakers Bureau, staffed by member-garden professionals, offers roughly one-hour image-rich virtual tours for community groups, schools, and garden clubs, covering the history and seasonal highlights of each member garden. It serves as the consortium’s main channel for public-facing and peer-to-peer outreach.
