Bomenbieb

Buist 等人的《Bijzondere bomen in Nederland 250 verhalen》、J.J.C.

About Bomenbieb

Bomenbieb (short for “Bomengids voor natuurliefhebbers en boomexperts”) is a Dutch online tree guide set up by arborist Simen Brunia, with knowledge-transfer work consolidated since 2020. The site is published in Dutch and serves tree enthusiasts and professionals across the Netherlands and Flanders. Information is cross-linked between species, associated organisms and individual specimens so that visitors can move between taxonomic, ecological and locational perspectives. Bomenbieb runs without advertising and is funded by voluntary donations from visitors.

Three Pillars of the Database

The site rests on three pillars. The Boomsoorten (tree species) pillar indexes 279 species across 75 genera, each with identification photos and seasonal notes. The Boomgasten (tree associates) pillar catalogues 172 organisms living in, on or near trees, grouped into seven categories: bacteria, galls, insects, lichens, fungi, birds and mammals. The Bijzondere bomen (notable trees) pillar records 105 outstanding specimens across the twelve Dutch provinces plus Flanders and other parts of Europe, with description, photos and a location map. Cross-links let readers trace from a species to its typical associates and to the champion trees recorded for that species.

Photography and Identification Features

A dedicated photo library captures bark, leaves, buds, fruit, flowers, seasonal colour and rare tree cross-sections (boomschijven), with millimetre scale references for bud size and similar micro-features useful in field identification. All images are produced by the Bomenbieb team itself, which is why visitor submissions are not yet accepted; the team plans to open this up once its own collection is sufficiently complete. Within each pillar, photos and prose are interlinked so the same specimen can be reached from multiple angles.

Founder and Academic Background

Bomenbieb was founded by Simen Brunia, a certified European Tree Technician who advises Dutch municipalities and other organisations on tree management, performs tree-safety inspections, runs lectures and excursions and teaches at several educational institutions. The Over ons page and his personal site simenbrunia.nl jointly list seven reference titles, including G. de Graaff’s “Monumentale bomen in Nederland”, G. Buist et al.’s “Bijzondere bomen in Nederland 250 verhalen”, J.J.C. Janssen’s “Stadsbomen Vademecum 4 Boomsoorten en gebruikswaarde”, Suzanne Simard’s “Op zoek naar de moederboom”, Valerie Trouet’s “Wat bomen ons vertellen”, Martin Hermy’s “De juiste boom voor elke tuin” and Peter Wohlleben’s “Het verborgen leven van bomen”.

How to Use and Participate

Visitors can move between the three pillars through the top navigation or jump straight to the Alle boomsoorten overview, which is sorted alphabetically across 26 first-letter groups. The site carries no paywall; a donation button on the homepage supports iDEAL and bank transfer, with any amount from five euros. Questions, feedback and tree-identification requests go through the Contact form, and the team replies by email as soon as possible. Inquiries about lectures, courses or specialist fieldwork can be directed to the founder’s personal site simenbrunia.nl.
