Bonsai Empire

Platform Overview

Bonsai Empire is an online learning and community platform dedicated to the art of Bonsai. It serves everyone from complete beginners to advanced enthusiasts and brings together free care guides, species sheets, premium video courses, and a public discussion forum. The platform was started in December 2000 by Dutch founder Oscar Jonker as a personal hobby website he put together at age fifteen. Today it operates as a global Bonsai community across fifteen language editions and welcomes a combined audience of several million visitors each year.

Origins and Growth

Oscar Jonker launched the original single-page site in December 2000, when he was fifteen years old and looking for a way to share his growing interest in Bonsai. Over the years the site expanded step by step into a structured resource covering everyday care, species profiles, propagation, styling techniques and an open forum. As interest in Bonsai spread internationally, Oscar and a small team built out a paid online course programme. The course catalogue has since been reviewed and recommended by international Bonsai publications and associations including Bonsai Focus, Bonsai Clubs International, American Bonsai Society, Crataegus, Yamadori Blog and Esprit Bonsai.

Content Structure

The free side of the site is organised into four main sections. Techniques covers pruning, wiring, repotting, watering, fertilising and placement; Bonsai Styling and Tree Cultivation explain styling, defoliation, trunk work, propagation from cuttings and seed, as well as collecting trees from the wild and selecting nursery stock. Tree Species hosts detailed care sheets for the most common Bonsai subjects such as Juniper, Ficus, Japanese Maple, Chinese Elm, Azalea, Pines, Jade, Spruce, Wisteria and Carmona. Inspiration rounds out the site with a gallery, Bonsai history and styles, progressions and curated Top 10 articles.

Courses and Instructors

The paid online programme consists of five main courses: the Beginners Course (17 lectures, around 2.5 hours), the Intermediate Course (24 lectures, around 3.5 hours), Developing Deciduous Bonsai (26 lectures, around 10 hours), the Fundamentals Course (22 lectures, around 2 hours), and Advanced Bonsai Course 1 (26 lectures, around 6 hours). Instructors include masters such as Masahiko Kimura (Japan), Walter Pall (Germany), Michael Hagedorn and Bjorn Bjorholm (both in the United States). The accompanying public forum has grown into an active community with several hundred topics and several thousand replies covering care and styling questions.

Access and Operations

Bonsai Empire is headquartered in Amsterdam, North Holland, in the Netherlands, and operates as a small self-owned E-Learning company. Beyond the website itself, the team publishes short videos and updates on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. All CO2 emissions from the website and video streaming are offset through the Trees for All reforestation programme. Everyday Bonsai care questions are answered in the public forum by community members, while questions about courses and the online store are handled through the platform’s public contact channels.
