About
Nederlandse Tuinenstichting (NTs) is a Dutch foundation dedicated to the conservation of historic and contemporary gardens, parks, country estates and urban green space. The official site only states that it has been active for “ruim 40 jaar” (more than forty years); no precise founding year is published. NTs operates independently, does not receive government funding and is based in the Netherlands.
Mission
NTs argues that high-quality green space in the densely populated Netherlands is under pressure from building plans, lack of money and lack of knowledge. To counter this, it lists five core tasks: protecting and maintaining historic and contemporary gardens, parks and urban green; offering expertise to governments and private owners; raising public awareness of green cultural heritage; researching garden and landscape architects and publishing the results; and encouraging knowledge exchange by having members open their private gardens to other members.
Main Activities
NTs works on two fronts. First, “green heritage”: together with organisations such as Bond Heemschut and Cuypersgenootschap, NTs intervenes in threatened estates, post-war modern gardens (its Post-65 project), Amsterdam canal gardens and similar cases, including appeals to the Raad van State. Second, opening gardens to the public: NTs edits the Open Tuinengids (Open Gardens Guide), published since 1991 and listing by province the gardens and nurseries open to visitors. The Open Moestuinengids (Open Kitchen Gardens Guide) lists more than one hundred kitchen gardens. The latest Open Tuinengids contains roughly 448 gardens and nurseries.
Publications
NTs publishes two kinds of materials. The Open Tuinengids and Open Moestuinengids are annual guides to Dutch gardens and nurseries, available free to members. Tuinjournaal is the members’ magazine, appearing three times a year with an online archive stretching back to 1984; recent issues have covered volunteers, Japanese gardens seen from a Western perspective, animals in the garden, flower bulbs and water in the garden.
Membership and Support
Annual membership is 49.50 euro (“vriend”), which includes the two open-garden guides, three issues of Tuinjournaal and a 20 euro voucher from Kwekerij Abbing. A “partner-tuinenpas” membership is 59.50 euro. Students pay 30 euro. NTs explicitly states that it does not receive government funding; long-term income comes from members, periodic donations, legacies and corporate sponsors. Members may list their own gardens in the next Open Tuinengids.
