Willamette Valley Hardy Plant Group

Organisation Profile and Service Region

The Willamette Valley Hardy Plant Group (WVHPG) is a non-profit gardening society based in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, USA, serving gardeners across Lane County and neighbouring communities including Eugene, Springfield and Coburg. The group uses a Eugene-area post-office box for correspondence and stays in touch with members via the contact email listed on its official website, holding meetings, talks and the annual plant sale at the Lane County Events Center and in members’ own gardens.

Purpose and Membership Structure

The group’s purpose is to educate the wider community about perennials, shrubs and ornamental garden plants, to encourage members to open their gardens to one another, and to nurture a continuing love of gardening. Membership is open to everyone: a single membership is USD 30 per calendar year, while a two-person household membership is USD 50 for two calendar years. Renewals are due each January; new members joining after 1 September are credited through the end of the following year. Members enjoy free access to monthly meetings, seminars, workshops, field trips, private garden tours and the annual summer picnic and barbecue.

Speaker Programme and Garden Exchange

WVHPG hosts a monthly speaker programme open to members and visitors. The next in-person talk is scheduled for Tuesday, 12 May 2026, when historian and film-maker David Hedberg presents “Heritage Trees in Oregon History”. Beyond the regular talks, the group organises private garden open days, nursery visits and field trips, and gathers members for a summer picnic and barbecue where gardeners of all backgrounds share experience on plant care, design and propagation.

Annual Hardy Plant Sale

The group’s most popular tradition is the Annual Hardy Plant Sale, held on the Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend in the Auditorium building of the Lane County Events Center & Fairgrounds, from 9 am to 2 pm. Organised by WVHPG volunteers, the sale follows a “by gardeners, for gardeners” ethos. Plants on offer come from members’ own gardens and include perennials, shrubs, native flowers and hardy varieties adapted to the Pacific Northwest climate, bringing well-grown garden plants to local households at friendly prices.

Resources, Contact and Partner Network

The society shares its speaker schedule, plant-sale announcements, garden visit opportunities and member resources through the official website and its Facebook page; prospective members can download the membership application online and follow the latest updates. WVHPG maintains long-standing exchange with other gardening clubs, plant societies and community gardens across Oregon and the Willamette Valley, jointly supporting the popularisation of hardy-plant knowledge and the continuation of local horticultural culture in the Pacific Northwest.
