Overview and Geographic Coverage

The Pacific Northwest District is a regional district of the American Rose Society (ARS), coordinating 17 local rose societies across Washington, Oregon, Alaska, western Montana and British Columbia, Canada. The District’s stated purpose is to further interest in roses through education, demonstration and cultural events, and to advance the aims and objectives of the American Rose Society in the region.

Organization and Officers

The District is led by a District Director and structured around standing committees including the Prizes and Awards Committee, horticulture judging, arrangements, and consulting rosarian committees. Officer terms run concurrently with the District Director term. Local societies submit Annual Reporting Forms each year and Master Rosarian applications are vetted through the consulting rosarian network. The District website maintains public rosters of Past District Directors, current officers and PNW District Contacts.

Publications and Member Education

The District publishes the Northwest Rosarian newsletter in summer and winter issues each year, covering cultivation techniques, event recaps and award winners. Since 2022 the District has worked with the ARS to host the ARS 2022 Virtual Hort Judging School Videos and the ARS Virtual Hort Judging Audit Videos for remote study. The Rose Culture Articles section on the website collects member-authored pieces on Buying Roses Made Easy, Budding Roses, Propagating Hardwood Cuttings, Soil and Water, Chemical Safety, Fertilizer, Hybridizing Roses, Diseases of Roses, Insects in our Garden and other topics. Buying Roses Made Easy by Lou Little of the Fort Vancouver Rose Society received the ARS Award of Merit in 2008.

Research, Cultivar Conservation and Community Service

The District participates in the ARS national Roses in Review program, aggregating local cultivar performance data from members each year. The website preserves a Buck Roses slide show contributed by Kent Zwick to document Griffith Buck’s Oregon-bred rose introductions. The Centennial Rose Garden, established by the Olympia Rose Society in 1989 for Washington’s statehood centennial, occupies grounds at the Schmidt House in Tumwater (built 1904) and is maintained weekly by society members. The Master Rosarian program and Speakers Bureau extend the District’s outreach to local societies and the general public.

Annual Events and Recent Award Winners

The District Fall Conference is held annually, with the 2024 edition hosted on October 25-26. The District also runs the PNW District Photo Contest, PNW District Rose Show Awards and coordinates entries for the ARS national show.
