Society for the Protection of Native Plants,

Garden in the Woods

Go Botany

Founding and Early History

Native Plant Trust was founded in 1900 as the Society for the Protection of Native Plants and is the United States’ first plant conservation organization, as well as the only one solely focused on the native flora of New England. The society began by opposing the widespread collection of wild plants that was common at the turn of the twentieth century. For most of its history it operated publicly under the name New England Wild Flower Society. In 2018 the organization formally adopted the name Native Plant Trust, signaling a shift in emphasis from individual species protection toward the conservation of regional native plant ecosystems as a whole. In 2023 it was awarded the Candid Gold Seal of Transparency, an honor reserved for non-profits that demonstrate the highest standards of public accountability. Its head office has been based in Wayland, Massachusetts since 2023, with a permanent staff of 30 people supported by roughly 1,500 trained volunteers working throughout the region each year.

Garden in the Woods and Nasami Farm

The trust operates two public-facing sites. Garden in the Woods lies in Framingham, Massachusetts just west of Boston. Sited on forty-five acres of eskers and steep-sided valleys left by retreating glaciers, it displays more than one thousand species of New England native plants in a naturalistic setting and includes a nursery sales point, a visitor center and a one-mile main loop path. Nasami Farm is located on seventy-five acres in the Connecticut River Valley at Whately, Massachusetts. The farm propagates nursery stock from seed that the trust sustainably harvests from healthy wild populations throughout the region, supplies plants for habitat restoration projects, and carries out contract growing for landscape and restoration clients.

Seed Banking, Plant Conservation, and Go Botany

Plant conservation is the heart of the trust’s mission. Three seed banks serve distinct purposes: a Conservation Seed Bank that safeguards rare and endangered species, a Restoration Seed Bank that supplies the Restoration Accelerator™ program working with local growers on ecologically appropriate seed for habitat repair, and a nursery seed bank that supplies Nasami Farm. The trust also maintains Living Collections for the rarest species in the region and collaborates with state natural heritage programs, universities and land managers on population monitoring. Digitally, Go Botany provides Full Key and Dichotomous Key tools that help users identify more than three thousand New England plant species, while the PlantShare community lets amateur naturalists share observations, request identification help and coordinate local surveys.

Education Programs and Volunteer Network

Education and public engagement run through every program. The trust offers a Basic Certificate program and two Advanced Certificate tracks, one in horticulture and one in conservation, taught through in-person workshops and online sessions. Beyond its own curriculum, the trust partners with regional botanical gardens, nature centers and universities on lectures and short courses, and the Go Botany Teaching Tools supply classroom resources for school and college instructors. Roughly 1,500 trained volunteers carry out seed collection, plant identification, garden maintenance and conservation fieldwork across New England, forming a year-round workforce that extends the reach of a small permanent staff.

Membership and Cross-Organization Collaboration

The trust’s revenue comes from membership fees, course tuition, plant sales, donations and project grants. Members enter Garden in the Woods free of charge, receive discounts at Nasami Farm and on classes and events, and are invited to members-only programs such as the autumn Night of Illumination. Through the trust’s reciprocal agreement with the American Horticultural Society, members gain free or reduced admission to more than 380 participating public gardens across the United States. Regionally, the trust also holds six native plant sanctuaries across New England, including the wheelchair-accessible Eshqua Bog boardwalk in Vermont and Annie Sturgis Sanctuary in Vassalboro, Maine, extending its work from formal conservation projects into wild places that members of the public can visit directly.
